Must be a new thang! Re: SunshineT's Build: OC at last!!! 4199Jan 01, 2013 8:08 pm Happy New Year everyone!! What a different place we are in now compared to this time last year. Regulars on here might remember the horrible storm water pipe disaster we had which this time last year was consuming all our energy... But this year we had 22 for sit down lunch in our lovely new home for Christmas!! Sit down lunch wasn't the plan, but when the rains set in and I realised I could move the couches near the fire place and have two tables together it worked! The joys of flexible rooms (Jo knows I am all about this We have also had an incredibly productive week or so on the house, making the most of our 9 house guests (including us 4 that was 13 sleeping in our house for a week!). We landscaped the front area of the yard - lots of lovely natives like lilli pillys, banksias, flax plants, mint bushes, ferns and the like. Photos to come. Installed the study bench (custom from Ikea). For those of you that remember DH's obsession with height, you will laugh at how high our study bench is. So looks like we will need to get some adjustable height bar stools for the study so we can all use the bench. Also installed the downstairs kids' kitchen bench and Lack shelves, plus patio bench cupboards, again all 3 items from Ikea. Needless to say we have become regular shoppers at Ikea recently. But it is all working a treat so we are happy with how it is turning out. I promise to post photos soon. And kiwi will be pleased to know we have more paintings, photos and pieces on the walls now But here is a weird twist for you. We designed the house to get the cross breezes. This is working a treat and the house has been cooler than we expected. (Our 3 month electricity bill was $210 and gas was $60). But get this - the cross breezes are working so well that our damn doors are slamming shut constantly. Not only is it noisy and shakes the house, but now it has made the door handle in the bathroom loose. My sister-in-law thought she locked herself in one day, panicked, yanked the handle and sure enough it broke. Brother-in-law and DH fixed it, but consequence is that DH went out and bought hooks to put on the back of the door so we can hook the door to the skirting board. Maybe we should have got magnetic door stoppers. But the wind is so strong through the house that these doors just slam like a train wreck. So there you go - sustainable design worked but we overlooked the detail of doors blowing in the wind! Our house is amazing - hardly turned the heater on (which is partly a shame because we love having the fire going) and have only used the air con one afternoon for a couple of hours since we have been in.... unfortunately, like you the doors are a problem. We even managed to take a huge chunk out of one of the doors when I had one of the kids toys up against it to hold it open, the wind was too strong, slammed shut and the toy managed to wreck the door, putty and paint now required!!! I am going to get some wedge door stop things to hold them open I think.... not complaining after living in a rental that needed the heater on nearly 24/7... slamming doors is a small price to pay... Look forward to seeing some more of your house pics soon. Fig Landscapes has produced an e-book and native plant index, available for purchase from their website.
