Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 04, 2010 5:49 pm We've only been waiting 9 months for land registration, finalisation of plans etc and we're at a point where we're ready to go and it's RAINING!!!!!!! Could anyone shed any light on what effect rain has on a build. For example, a house being built down the street from me had brickies laying brickwork yesterday in the rain... which i thought was strange. What do you think the chances of me getting a slab poured in the next few weeks are???? Especially if this rain keeps up? Re: Rain and it's effect on a build 2Jun 04, 2010 7:02 pm Yes, rain has a big effect until you are at lockup. I'm not sure where you are, but in Sydney it has been raining for weeks, but next week will be good. When you're at bricking stage, like us, it's not really a welcomed sight (especially when you don't have a roof). Stefan Building the M3tr!con Liberty 42 at Stonecutters Ridge. (And needs one rain free day to get me to lockup). Next week will be OK after Monday. Thursday for sure. It wasn't anywhere near being dry, but it looked like it may have been an owner/builder project so who knows. At any rate, I've heard similar about the ground having to be dry... Stonecutters Ridge Community Website | My photos Re: Rain and it's effect on a build 9Jun 05, 2010 12:19 am I have seen slabs poured on quite wet sites with no ill effects. In the long run you will be happy that they waited for the right conditions though- neither you nor you builder want to risk a problem for the sake of a little time. If the trades are keen they can work in the rain, but it's a bit hard with power tools. I hope it clears up for you! Not totally accurate but it gives me a little peace of mind. http://www.eldersweather.com.au/raindat ... bleCookies Re: Rain and it's effect on a build 11Jun 05, 2010 2:20 pm Hey- I had another thought on this last night...How about we spare a thought for the poor tradies who are not paying their bills while it rains. Imagine the stress if your wages stop for a couple of weeks! At least you know they need the rain to stop at least as much as home-owners do! Dennis Re: Rain and it's effect on a build 12Jun 06, 2010 6:33 am New house being built next to us has roof on and gutters on, but no downpipes. Blocks slope right to left and down, so neighbours get all the water. Fortunately, we are on the high side. Hate to be on the low side.......... Re: Rain and it's effect on a build 13Jun 07, 2010 2:25 pm When we had ours done, our builder said that they needed 4 days straight with no rain for the ground to dry up so they could do the piers and the external plumbing, then it didn't matter if it rained, just whether the tradies wanted to work with a small shower happening or not. Re: Rain and it's effect on a build 14Jun 07, 2010 2:36 pm Hi Bek, I feel for you as I am in exactly the same position. I had my site scraped just before the rain started, so it has been getting well and truely soaked. Jokingly my boss asked me on Friday how the pool was going. I said, I plan on getting one but wasn't planning it this early! My SS has told me we need a few days of clear weather to dry up the ground, so they can get the heavy machinery in to put in the piers, and lay the slab. Like someone else already mentioned it is not good for anyone involved in building, ie no work = no money, including the builder. This will also be throwing out building schedules, material supplies, etc. It also might impact on my ability to get into my new house before Christmas. Having said all that though, I am still grateful for the rain, and always hoping it is falling in the catchment areas. It is trying times for both of us Bek. Cheers Re: Rain and it's effect on a build 15Jun 08, 2010 11:53 am I cannot believe the conditions that some contractors are willing to work in. My site scrape was done yesterday, and although it wasn't raining at the time, there was inches of standing water all over the block 12hrs earlier. So it turned from a swampy mess into a flat muddy mess. Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes. Build Thread Re: Rain and it's effect on a build 16Jun 08, 2010 6:12 pm Hi all, New member here getting ready to select a builder out here in Perth. I am a geotechnical engineer, so I read some interesting queries here about earthworks! To the OP, don't know about the tradies melting in the rain, but a little rain is actually helpful for a sand site, as moist sand is easier to shape and compact than dry sand when excavating the slab subgrade. Clay is of course a whole different matter. I wouldn't expect it would matter at all to laying bricks, apart from having unhappy bricklayers?
