Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 03, 2010 10:26 pm In our case, we have found that the trade's key can still open our doors and locks, even though we have "engaged" them. We have told our builder twice now about this as we are not comfortable about it at all. We have not fully moved in to our house and are in process of doing so, we are moving and storing furniture there while we are getting all the flooring, painting done etc. We first advised our builder about this 2 weeks ago and still no action about recitifying it has happened. If you possibly can, double check that the trade's key does not open your locks after handover and even after you have tumbled them. We intentionally left one lock unengaged so the trades could still enter and use his trade key (we knew the painter who was going to paint our house after handover). Anyway, when we turned up to see the painter our front door was open .. it turned out he came through the front door with his trades key, and this lock was supposed to have been engaged once we put in our new house keys. We then did an experiment with the trades key and the other locks it turns out the trades key could still open every one of them even though we had engaged them. Now if this has happened to us, surely it can happen to other people too. That is why I did my post. For your own piece of mind, ensure you can test the trades key ... I suggest you could work this out with your supervisor/client liaison.
