Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 25, 2022 10:52 am As my driveway and porch are on different side of the house, have to walk around to reach my front porch (alternative is go via garage space). Is it good to use concrete 1m wide , 8m2 area which costs $1200 and go with builder or can be done after handover? Is it a good idea to add a concrete layer around the house ? It sounds expensive. Any longterm benefit, or filling pebbles or stones ? Re: New Home - Concrete around house 2Aug 25, 2022 11:11 am if you are on reactive soil, you should be building a perimeter path around the entire house of at least 1M with a 50mm fall. Its handy for getting around the outside of the house, its necessary for keeping water away from the foundations. The gold standard is a strip drain at the edge of the path to collect the water run off. You can have the builder do it or you can do it after handover. After handover is usually cheaper, but if its laid poorly or incorrectly, its less likely you will get a concreter back to fix it than if it was the builders responsibility. The builder will charge you anywhere from 20-50% more to do it. Dark matter scientist, can breathe underwater, mind reader and can freeze matter just by willing it. Trust me, its in my sig. Re: New Home - Concrete around house 3Aug 25, 2022 4:35 pm I had the pour of my slab coordinated with the quite large outdoor entertaining area. Its all worked quite well. Not sure on costs - ie if it would have been cheaper to do later. But my termite boundary etc etc is all part of it. I'd personally gets as much done as possible in one hit.
