Browse Forums Building A New House Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13481Jun 07, 2016 11:05 am Davidr13 Just a bit of good news. We have been in our new MJH home since Christmas. No serious problems with the build, and any minor problems have been fixed up quickly. With all the wild winds and rain last week end, I was wondering how the house handled it. Good news is that not a single drop of rain came in any where. No roof leaks, no water under doors, or windows. Only a small amount of water came through under the garage door, but with the wild winds blowing directly on the door, I was pleased that not much came in, and it was easily mopped up. Building the Manhattan One, Central Coast, NSW Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13483Jun 07, 2016 11:22 am Grakat sunshine202 Funnily enough I sent off an email about 2hrs ago to confirm our design variations and put it in exactly those words to let them know I want the hermitage layout. We also ended up deciding to add the verandas I think you will be happy with the verandas. I will be interested to see what MJH come back to you with in regards to the kitchen. Since the Hermitage and the Bronte share the same basic design it should be possible. The question will be price. We also were thinking great room, but where. One of the recesses would take our buffet, and the other would take a TV, which rules out those two locations, which would otherwise be perfect. Putting it outside the home theatre room blocks the straight through path from the front entry to the kids retreat. I would like to factor in a wood burner as we have access to an abundant supply of firewood. Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13484Jun 07, 2016 11:35 am In the end we decided not to go with the verandas. They are only 1.4m wide and not really a functional space for the $ in our opinion. We looked at extending them to be inline with the back of the house but the quote was pricey. We have decided to extend the alfresco over to the children's activities and out to the back of the current alfresco instead at this stage. I think it will give a much more functional area. Deciding on that change made me go back to the standard Bronte kitchen. But I did get a quote for a kitchen to be like the Hermitage-it came back as a provisional allowance of $1620 for 2000mm wide kitchen island bench top similar to Hermitage Display. We were happy when we got the SMS bricks were starting straight after frames were up as there is a shortage of brickies in Sydney...but it has dragged a bit. Will try and be patient as we are a few days from having bricks completed. We are building the Edenvale and have just learnt that the front feature wood is a Merbau that will bleed for up to 3 years all over our porch. They used this wood to match our wood garage door. This is a photo of how the bleed currently looks. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is totally not acceptable. They've said they will replace in a treated pine and stain but due to the blue colour of treated line it will be impossible to get the stain to match the garage door colour. We are not happy with either solution but our area manager said this is our only option. Would appreciate any advice. Hi, I used Merbau on a deck and the first 1 or 2 weeks is did bleed a little bit on to our very porous travertine tiles. We used Ultra Deck from bunnings and applied an additional extra 2 coats and the issue stopped.. Over a few weeks of summer sunlight the stain totally faded away. Thats my experience.. We are in the early plan stages of building with McDonald Jones, just wanting to know if anyone has built the Ablany design? Its so hard building a house that there is no display for. We are building the albany two on an unregistered block in Riverstone Meadows estate (would be great if there is anyone building there too on here) Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13492Jun 10, 2016 2:32 pm SMAD Rach_C Hi All, Can anyone provide contact details of someone in MJH to contact with issues with your build. I also built a merbau deck at a previous home. It bled for about two months, and then stopped once I sealed the deck. I think that is something that you just have to put up with, if you want real hard wood, and the look. Don't forget, that the stained posts will fade, and you will be staining them to keep the colour. The colour will fade, depending on how much direct sunlight they get. Only other option that I can think of it to change it yourself, after handover, to Aussie hard wood. But with that size, I hate to think what it will cost. As it is, your posts are laminated, to keep the cost down. Once piece of Australian hardwood is going to be very expensive. Or else go with treated pine, and paint to co ordinate, not to match. ( the stain is never going to match exactly anyways ) Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13493Jun 10, 2016 5:55 pm 10th June 2016 Since the update of 29/5; the framework for the basement floor was completed by 2/6/16. But since then no progress except installation of electrical box which has been completed around 8/6/16. Will keep you posted. djayasi Hi all We are building the split level Monterey at Kellyville. The colour selections went through really well. This is the second time we are building with McDonald Jones. So far the experience has been good. Slab and piering was completed as planned about three weeks ago 66.5 additional peering was required; Allowance in the quote was for 40 meters We had to pay $5985 for the excess as per the agreement and this was paid on 9th May 2016. Immediate progress payments was requested for the slab completion stage on 12th May and we paid a day later. As of today 29/5/16 the frames are about be installed. We will keep you posted. Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13494Jun 11, 2016 8:53 pm Hi All, first time posters. We are building the Sierra home in Schofields. Just finished our colour appointment which went really well. Our price at the colour was GST based, however, our tender never mentioned anything regarding GST neither did any of our client liaisons at Mcdonald Jones. What is odd, certain items that were included in our original tender definitely were GST price based as when we chose them at the colour appointment they were the same cost as what was in the original tender. I guess question is, were all your original tender prices non-GST inclusive? Our building contract has increased by 14k, which, we never really budgeted for. Thanks in advance Welcome to the group, and all the fun of building your new home. When I first started asking prices, I asked about GST. All quotes and pricing has include GST. I think that this is the law? So I had no surprises, as all quotes all along included GST. Your contract should state that as well. Yeah all our quotes didnt show GST and the contract did but the contract total matches the final consolidated tender plus colour selection items (thus quotes had gst but just didnt show it as a separate figure like the contract) Cheers, Steve Building the Miami 16 Exec with Modified Balinese facade http://mcdonaldmiami16.blogspot.com.au/ Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13498Jun 12, 2016 10:24 pm Stuart05, Your blog looks great! Thanks for all the great information. I have a question you have a quote of $1590 for 40mm stonebench top, is that both the tops (island and the stove side) ? Would anybody here know the cost of Bi-Fold doors and any idea on vanity draws for bath? Thanks! Would anybody here know the cost of Bi-Fold doors and any idea on vanity draws for bath? Thanks! Can't help you with the stone bench question. In my info it's $250 per bank of draws for the vanity. I found some prices for an aluminium bi-fold door in my paperwork-cheapest was $2850. I also found 3.1 bi-fold door $3780, 3.6 and 3.4x2.1 to family (joined) $8510 etc. Looks like cost would be dependent on house design...
