Not sure where you are mandv, we're in Sydney & we used the concreter our SS suggested (after I asked SS for a lead). We got 3 quotes and the MDJ-reccomended guy was the cheapest. He did a pretty good job, PM me if you want his details.

Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 3208Nov 23, 2012 8:36 am has anyone had any luck with getting a different colour from whats supplied as standard? can I sign something to say I don't care about them guaranteeing the Taubmans 2 x coat system? They won't even do 1/4 strength of one of their colours! I want 1/4 strength of exterior wall colour for the eaves. I think this is ridiculous! and it looks like i'm going to have to repaint myself after handover. Just received building contracts - talk about war and peace it's not light reading. Any tips or special things I should look out for? Anyone had their solicitor look over the contracts? Is it worth doing? I decided to review it myself and forgo my solicitor for the following reasons. 1) I needed to be aware of the contents of the contract anyway so I was going to have to read it regardless. 2) It's long and detailed but it's pretty straightforward. I am more confused reading Apple's Terms and Conditions for iTunes! I still had a few questions but my CLO was able to quickly and clearly explain them to me. 3) The Solicitor cannot catch the real errors, eg: incorrect building specifications, errors in the building plans (eg: check your window heights!), etc. 4) MJH are not known for negotiating on their contracts. 5) MJH use a standard HIA building contract to which my solicitor basically said the invoice would be made out for "wasting her time" (you get that sort of honesty after 15 years). That said, it is several hundred dollars ontop of several hundred thousand dollars, and that may be worth the money for the peace of mind. It is really up to the individual; for example I have chosen to engage an independent building certifier to protect my interests. Sure the bank and MJH will have their own certifiers in, but having someone working for me is worth the $1000 over the coarse of the build. Really just depends where you are comfortable. My husband spoke to our SS yesterday afternoon and we are looking at PCI on Mon 10th Dec and having the keys before Christmas. Very exciting! We recently had to have the driveway removed from our contract and arranged externally due to a condition in our DA that 10mts of it from the main road to our boundary had to be bitumen and MJH could only provide concrete. We got home from holidays today and went out to have a look. The fence is gone, so that is exciting. I love the tiles that we selected for the front patio. Looks like carpet to the bedrooms & study still needs to be done. Also splashback & ducted rangehood in the kitchen to be installed.
