Browse Forums Building A New House Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13722Jul 30, 2016 7:43 pm Ive got a few questions that I would like to ask about this builder. Ive noticed that there have been a few posts in previous pages that have stated that they have been taken down due to legal threat. Is this a pretty common occurance if someone posts anything negative about the workmanship etc? Has anyone had their build go past the forecasted completion date? If so by how long approx? How do the supervisors take complaints about workmanship on site? Do you have to fight to have defects fixed? Thanks Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13723Jul 30, 2016 8:59 pm EM1 ZerinShobnom We didn't go for full-height tiling for bathroom/Ensuite with MJH mainly because of budget issues and the high price quoted for this upgrade. My questions are:Those who also didn't do full height tiling to bathrooms, - could you please let me know if there is any issue with the areas not having tiles? - Do you regret for not doing it? - Have you done it after handover? - Any alternative solution you recommend like Vinyl Wallpaper etc? Thanks in advance! I would also like to know the answer to these questions, i'm planning to do full height tiling after handover. We opted to do 1,200 high tiles in bathrooms. We have 2.7 ceilings. I did not want the closed in look of tiles to ceilings. We are very pleased with the look of the 1,200 high tiles. I am quite tall, and never manage to splash water above the height of the tiles in the shower area. I would be very careful in trying to extend the tiles later on. You run a risk of not matching the tiles exactly. It is not easy to ensure that you get the same batch for colour match. As well, from my experience, is it nearly impossible to match the grout later, so you will end up trying to re grout every thing. Thanks I think that if you go through the posts carefully, there are more positive than negative comments. Have heard the MJH might ask to take down defamatory posts, but I do not have proof of it. We are more than happy with our home. Any defects were attended to quickly after hand over. I basically let them build the house with little interference on my part. They are the experts, not me. The house was finished six weeks early, and every thing was as per plans. There is a MJH house on each side of us, and they also both report that they are happy with the builds, and defects are handled quickly, and with out trouble. I suppose that there is always a problem here or there. If was going to build again I would not hesitate to use MJH. Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13725Jul 30, 2016 9:06 pm Just3ofus I'm sure you could extend to full height tiling afterwards. Just buy the tiles at the same time as the rest of your bathroom in the same batch. Very risky to try and do this. Your chances of getting the tiles from the same batch are not good. Plus you will never get an exact match for the grout. Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13726Jul 30, 2016 10:52 pm Hi, My first post here although i have been following othere posts closely. Total living/dining area is about 32sq. My fiancé is an electrician and recommends either 9 or 12 depending on strength of downlight. Obviously the shape of the area would impact this as well. Perhaps have a look at the 3D walk throughs to get an idea of what you might like. Chances are you can cut a few out. Personally for us MJH has been more pro's and con's to date. I struggle to get any update from anyone. My slab supervisor called once and invited me on site, he gave me like 2 hours notice, i was unable to make it, there on the pretty much did the piering, poured the slab and noone called to update. Now apparently i have been assigned another site supervisor for the frame stage, noone has called and introduced themselves, my neighbour today sent me a photo of some frames on my site. i didnt even know. looks like they just do their thing and dont bother to call and provide periodic updates. Just curious to know what other peoples experiences have been so far. Im building in Edmondson park, Sydney. cheers Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13732Jul 31, 2016 8:04 pm k8e.d Ptstst Hi, My first post here although i have been following othere posts closely. Now to book colours appointment. Let the fun begin Exciting times! We're planning to build a Bronte nearby. Currently at step 3 of the pre build process-our file has been with the plan drawing dept for almost 4 weeks. In the meantime I've been stalking this page to get tips so I'm ready for our upcoming colours selection day at Thornton Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13737Aug 01, 2016 9:55 am Eden71 Nice work. Are you in the coast at present? We're moving up from Sydney. Already 100k above house build cost and haven't even been to selections Yes. We're lucky in that we're already living onsite on our acreage, and will be during the build. Love the coast lifestyle! Our cost has creeped up too. We are just over 100k over base price. I know colours selections has the potential to add $$$. I've found it all a bit daunting but we don't have an appt date yet so still time to work out where to compromise... Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13739Aug 01, 2016 10:09 am Eden71 Nice work. Are you in the coast at present? We're moving up from Sydney. Already 100k above house build cost and haven't even been to selections We pushed over $150K over base build price on our build - mind you we modified our house from 4 bed to a 6 bedroom house. Selections were not too bad just a matter of what you want vs what you need on some things. We upgraded and included the things we wanted that would cost more to do after build. Most of my costs at selections went to kitchen and bathroom upgrades. Didn't want to have to upgrade those areas later cause chances are it wouldn't get done and I would always have the thoughts of "I wish I had done that". So far we don't have an major I wish we had done that thoughts- we are just really wanting to see the finished house so we can finally see how our colour selections look, it is such a long time between colour selections to actually seeing the finished product - so far so good though and we a re very close to the end so very much looking forward to the next 6 weeks as our build winds up. Goodluck with your selections day - Word of advice, make sure that when you go over selections at end of day that you check each selection carefully as typos happen and once done the onus is back on you and the cost to change is yours as we found out with our internal doors which were entered wrong at colours but as we signed off on it we own it sadly. If you are unsure as to what selection says on paper ask them to show you it so you know it is right oh and photograph as many selections as you can so you have them to go back to. Hi AKG, We had a base tender of $592 for 31 squares from MC Donald Jones. It looks relatively cheaper than other builders.
