Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 31, 2010 10:15 pm We are planninng on having wood heating as no access to natural gas. Our builder has recommended that we don't have any sliding doors as wood heaters can warp sliding doors. Has anyone heard of this before? Currently have a couple of sliding doors and think that they are great. Thanks Re: Wood heater warping sliding doors?? 2Jun 01, 2010 8:31 am I do not see how a wood heater would be any different from any other sort of single point source heater and how it could warp doors? Sounds like a myth to me. If your sliding door is very close to the heat source then maybe, but otherwise I have no idea what they could be talking about. See the following link (since this is a US site, it refers to them as woodstoves - same as what we call wood heaters): http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/firepl/msg0123131517592.html This may be why you were told it would warp timber sliding doors. It may dry out the wood. The problem is easily solved. As discussed in the link above, just make sure you buy a wood heater that has an area on top suitable for heating a kettle, buy a cast iron pot or decorative steamer (make sure it's cast iron so it won't melt if you forget about it!), and occasionally boil some water on top of the heater. This will re-humidify the air. Alternatively, run a humidifier in the house during winter. I used to live in the US and we had stained timber double-hung windows in the house we used to live in. We heated with a wood heater all winter and never noticed any problems with the windows because of it. But it would get very dry sometimes and we used a steamer on top of the heater. I'm not sure it would be a problem here as it doesn't get nearly as cold so the heater would not be burning as much. Here is a link to a picture of the steamer we have - it looked nice on our wood heater. http://www.thefind.com/appliances/info-cat-steamer we have a standard size and often we have a lot of variety to choose 0 3575 We are looking for sliding doors which are 5 metres tall.
