Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Building with M - exposed RSJ's 2Jun 02, 2010 3:33 pm Normally you would box this in with some fairly thin (20mm) dressed timber. Are you able to do this? The holes in the bricks can be filled with a little mortar Regards, Dennis Re: Building with M - exposed RSJ's 4Jun 03, 2010 12:32 pm Hope RSJ is the correct term in Australia, I'm a pom and know them as rigid steel joists, or lintels. The holes are the holes that are in the bricks themselves not the mortar, not sure if they are for mortar expansion or weight saving or what. I was thinking of dressed timber myself but that will need more maintenance. Re: Building with M - exposed RSJ's 5Jun 03, 2010 12:36 pm Ours are painted with the holes filled with mortar (am looking out the window at the ones over the garage as I type). I think someone here once posted that they are galvanised so don't actually need to be painted........... Ours are painted the same colour as our downpipes / eaves. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Building with M - exposed RSJ's 6Jun 03, 2010 12:44 pm when you say holes in bricks do you mean weeper holes? Yeah, they are for some reason manufactured narrower than a standard brick and when I looked for them, I couldn't find any wider ones which would cover more of the brick, at least up to the holes. Strange ... maybe there are some, but hard to find ... Our lintels are painted too ... not that we asked for it. The holes, I think they just start to show and no, they are not filled only those that are visible sideways on window sills ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Building with M - exposed RSJ's 9Jun 03, 2010 1:14 pm kyton Faerie - he means the holes within the bricks themselves. The brick is normally sitting over the RSJ - not flush so you see into the brick itself. oh right! ok that makes sense now Building: M3tr1c0n - Santorini 26 [30.04.10] Builders on Site [29.11.10] Handover [11.12.10] Moved in [CURRENTLY] Moved in and adding all those extras we couldnt pay our builder to do http://mnsantorini.blogspot.com Building Standards; Getting It Right!
