Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 25, 2010 12:21 am So we are building the benchmark and we are stuck with the size of our block. They have put the house on the block so that there is 4 metres from the back of the house to the back fence and 6 metres from the garage to the council crossover with 4 metres from the start of the council crossover to the road, so 10 metres in total from the garage to the start of the road. I was wondering if you think it would look funny if I brought the house forward 1 - 2 metres or do you think that would be too close to the road? Anyone have any pics of what this might look like if I do?? Re: Frontage - House to Road 4May 25, 2010 11:01 am We're having a 4 meter setback. I think most ppl these days have around 5. I'd prefer to have a bigger backyard. But I suppose a 4 meter setback for mine isn't so bad because our land sort of curves at the front (we're at the top of a court on the side), so we'll end up with about 9 meters on the other side. Another advantage of having a smaller setback is the landscaping. If you wanna put fake grass it'll cost less. And you'll have more space at the back for entertaining. Re: Frontage - House to Road 5May 25, 2010 11:15 am Our regulations state a 6m setback. And garage is not allowed to be in front of house line. Fine by me as it is a deep block, still plenty of back yard for us. Does mean our front yard is quite large - 6m deep and 22m wide (including the driveway), block is 22m wide at widest point then slopes inward on one side. We have pebbles and shrubs in the front yard. Re: Frontage - House to Road 6May 25, 2010 11:20 am Ours had to be 6m from the footpath so all up I think it works out being at least 10m perhaps from the house to the road. I wouldn't want it any closer-it also depends on what house facade you have-ours you wouldn't want it closer to the road or footpath as it's quite an intense front. Re: Frontage - House to Road 7May 25, 2010 3:29 pm Ours is a 4.5 set back from the crossover to the garage. Then the house is about 6.5 from the cross over to the main bedroom walls. ---- Building in Banksia Grove We have keys - 31st March 2011 Re: Frontage - House to Road 8May 25, 2010 3:51 pm i think it depends on what all the other houses around you are doing. if they are all 10 metres back, yours might look a bit different, but not necessarily horrible... ours is 4.8m back, most of the other houses on our street are 6-8m back, but the house (well actually block of villa units) next to us on one side is only 4m back, so it doesn't look too out of place. Personally though I wouldn't have cared even if it DID look weird, my priority is a large back yard, so if we'd needed to and I'd been allowed to I would've gone even closer to the road.
