Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 22, 2010 9:43 pm Hi All, We are wanting floorboards in all the living areas of the home we will be building. I absolutely love the look of the high gloss finish but have heard scratches show up alot on the high gloss??? Anyone out there have high gloss floorboards and can comment on scratches and how easy or hard they are to keep clean? Would you recommend them??? Would appreciate anyones help, thanks in advance!! Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 2May 22, 2010 10:55 pm Hi, We put down new blackbutt hardwood flooring down approx 2 years ago but no high gloss as we were also told that it shows every mark. I have 4 children under 11years and the floors already look quite scratched not real happy with the wood floors and I wished I went for something more hard wearing like tiles! Next time I guess but If you dont have young children it probably wouldnt be a problem, Happy decision making Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 3May 23, 2010 7:30 am IMO I would go for a low sheen matt finish (we got our blackbutt floor boards done like this in our old house). If you have a lot of light coming into the house with high gloss, it will show up every single scratch and mark. Matt floors will resist scratches alot more but will obviously still dent and mark when things are dropped (keys are the biggest thing). DH and I were adamant on tiles for this house. Easy to care for and very hard to scratch and mark. Timber floors have such a beautiful warmth to them and every home looks great with them but upkeeping them is a nightmare. Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 4May 23, 2010 8:01 pm I have high gloss floor and wouldnt have it any other way. The only time I dont like the look of it is when it is late even and I have the sun shining through on a low angle and you can see the dust on the floor though i am pretty sure all types of floors would be the same. You may want to speak to people who have high gloss floors before making a decisition. A lot of companies dont like doing high gloss floors as you need to have a good floor sander and a gloss floor is harder to do. Gloss floors are easy to clean as the surface is very flat, and doesnt have that texture on it. It is also one of the hardest surfaces. If you are confident with how you floor was installed and if it was done good then you should have any problems. Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 5May 23, 2010 8:07 pm I used high gloss floorboards on renovated houses for the "wow" factor and it works no doubt, but personally wouldn't have them in my house - they show up EVERYTHING. Tiles in my personal house. Tiles in my personal house. just curious what type of gloss was it. was it two pack?? Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 9May 24, 2010 11:37 am We are getting blackbutt flooring. We have decided on Waterbased semi-gloss. The flooring company we are using talked us out of high gloss as we have large windows in the area where we are getting the floorboards and because they show up majority of marks very easily. Has anyone got a waterbased finish? What do you think of it? Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 11May 24, 2010 1:52 pm JJ, what brand/product name are you using as your Waterbased semi-gloss? Borg, why do you think that windows can be a problem if they are facing east? (I can understand strong W sun in summer, and also N sun, but not east ) My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 12May 24, 2010 2:40 pm North sun is not usually an issue because the sun is usually high and you only see minimal sun inside the house. It is not so much the intensity of the sun but the angle of the sun falling onto the floor. In the morning or in the after noon both east and west then you get the long light coming in through on the floor (all floor types have this issue) It can show up a lot of dust and stuff that is on your floor. I have no curtains in my house so I notice this late in the evening because I have a window in my theater room that lets light into my living area. Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 14May 25, 2010 7:47 am Hey JJ, anything that says "non-yellowing" helps (some water based products yellow with time). I am (still) tossing if we should use water based finish, so I am also wondering if anyone actually used it. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 15May 25, 2010 8:44 am Lex Hey JJ, anything that says "non-yellowing" helps (some water based products yellow with time). I am (still) tossing if we should use water based finish, so I am also wondering if anyone actually used it. I looked it up, and it mentions " Feast Watson EnviroMax Low Sheen is a non-yellowing water-based, two pack, aliphatic polyurethane. It is suitable for all interior timbers, especially flooring and areas subject to heavy traffic" So this has got to be good We went for waterbase as we didn't like the yellow look either. We wanted to keep the timber colour as natural as possible. I LOVE TIMBER!! Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 16May 26, 2010 8:37 am That's exactly my reason for still thinking about water based. Not sure of its other characteristics though (need to look them up with individual products, I guess). Can you tell me who are you using and what's your final charge per m2? Did you opt for a one-stop-shop (ie. same people supply, install and finish everything)?? Do they supply the water based coating as well? It's about ... mmmm can't remember ... much much more exy than all other finishes. Can you also tell me what is the method of installation and how thick is your timber? How much timber do you need (how big is your house)? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... I'm in Melbourne so the company I used probably won't go to Sydney But we used the one company to do the whole lot including the waterbased coating. We got 85 x 14mm overlay Blackbutt flooring (tongue & groove) .It cost us $119 per sqm approx for whole lot completed/finshed for 58.5 sqm. It would of been a little cheaper for the poly finish but as said before we don't like yellow. Re: High Gloss floorboards anyone???? 19May 26, 2010 9:56 am we also had high gloss in the house we just sold and never going there again. this house will be tiled. They showed up every mark and every scratch, they were only 3yrs old when we sold the house and they looked terrible, FWIW, we had felt on the bottom of our chairs and lounges, never wear shoes in the house, but its was just either dropping something ie a kids toys or what ever it was, they were just so soft. Are they going to glue it directly onto slab (again, assuming that this is a ground floor installation ), or are they installing plywood and how thick?
