Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 19, 2010 12:27 pm Ok, so i just had an inspection with my SS yesterday, and as you would expect, I found a few errors which I pointed out to the SS (he was VERY surprised that I found ANYTHING wrong), but what is of more concern (should it) to me, was this: Some of the studs and the noggins had knots in the wood which had been burnt out, leaving holes around 2-3 cm in diameter through the wood. Should I be worried about these? I cna't find anything at all int he standards and tolerances guide about studs and noggins and chipped off corners, holes through the wood etc, is there anything in there (or in Australian/NSW building codes that stipulates whether these are acceptable (specific clauses/sections would be nice so I can quote these to the SS, as he said he'd be doing nothing about them). I did also find a few noggins that had corners chipped off them due to the nails when they were installed, he said these would be fixed during the frams straightening. One more thing, is it Noggins or Noggings, I've seen it referred to as both? Re: Burnt out knots in studs and noggins 2May 19, 2010 1:08 pm holes up to 15-20mm should not be a problem. Whats the difference if your elec comes in a drills holes in the studs to run cables on internal walls. This is on the assuption they are using 90mm studs and not 75 which should be the case. Re: Burnt out knots in studs and noggins 3May 19, 2010 2:05 pm My frame inspector said it all depends on the load that the wood is bearing, and also what type of wood. He wasn't worried about knots in the stronger wood used for beams, but was more concerned about the lighter wood running across the base of the trusses, especially if the knot is near the middle. He got me to photograph a few knot holes, and also the holes cut through joists in the roof of the ground floor, for ducted heating. None of that made it onto the defect list though.
