Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 16, 2010 3:09 pm Hi, We're in the process of building a house on the Sunshine coast, QLD. The builder we're thinking of using, uses termi mesh to protect the house from termites. We asked about treated timber and his response was: 1) It was unnecessary as the termimesh carried a 50 year warranty and was already a very good system so treated pine would be redundant. (Although we never thing having reduncancy is a bad thing) 2) The treated pine doesn't work so well, as it gets cut and planed taking the protective layer off anyway. Living in QLD we're fairly concerned about termites. Has anyone else used both, or is this being overly paranoid? How good is treated pine and protecting against termites? How much extra should we expect to pay to use treated pine on a 360 m2 (internal) house? Any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated. Cheers, James. Re: Termite protection Termi mesh and treated pine. 2Jun 21, 2010 6:29 pm The termite framing does not need to be resealed after cutting to length. It comes with a 25 year transferrable guarentee issued by the chemical manufacturer. As far as I'm concerned, you can't have too much protection. The termite framing only adds about 10-12% to the total framing cost so in the scheme of things is a small outlay Re: Termite protection Termi mesh and treated pine. 3Jul 04, 2010 11:01 am We requested treated pine as well as the standard termi mesh that came with the build for a house just south of Brisbane. We thought the extra cost was worth it for peace of mind If I was to win Lotto, I would build with a different builder, now to win lotto Re: Termite protection Termi mesh and treated pine. 4Jul 04, 2010 11:57 am We had a choice - either some physical barrier like Termi Mesh / Gravel or the chemical system (apparently can't have both, which is what we were hoping for). We were told that it's apparently not infrequent that poor workmanship (like nail not going thru where it was supposed to, or something like that) renders a physical barrier quite weak, so we went for chemical. Still not sure if one is a better protection - not a huge fan of chemicals so they better be really good My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Yes, neither is termite damage that is not covered by your house insurance. 3 6575 MATE!!! I've checked their website and it's a 90% match at least.
