Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 15, 2010 7:20 pm Hi guys, our frames have been up. But found out that all the wall frames are MSGF5, roof truss is MGP10, and there are some pines with holes and cracks. Would like to know if it is okay and MSGF5 is equal to MGP10 or not so good as MGP10. Re: FRAME ISSUE! 3May 16, 2010 11:24 am Not sure. Did you investigate the properties of M.S.G. F5 (stands for Machine Stress Grading F5) vs. MGP10 yourself? I did start looking on the web, but had no time ... I'm sure you can find the answers. Maybe there's something useful on http://www.timber.org.au, eg. http://www.timber.org.au/resources/Timber_Standards_d.pdf If not, why not call the structural engineers ans ask? Or the PCA? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: FRAME ISSUE! 4May 16, 2010 2:47 pm MPG10 are better than F5, some builder uses F5 for frame some uses MPG10. They are 2 different method of rating timber strength. Nothing wrong with F5 as frame timber, that is what being use on our build and lot of others. Re: FRAME ISSUE! 5May 16, 2010 8:07 pm MGP = machine graded pine -hence you should se different paint marking on the lengths that the computer uses to sort. Now F5 I thought was a hand inspected pine. Perhaps they have changed the gradings to be able to be done by machine. I would prefer to see all houses with MGP10. Many carpenters will tell you its all the same. However they are probably not the ones that see how quickly it warps one they leave. Its a less dense timber from what i gather from my experience with it. Re: FRAME ISSUE! 6May 16, 2010 8:16 pm Ours are MGP10 and MGP12 ( just checked my happy snaps ) I had no idea what the difference was either still don't Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Sincerely, Anonymous Re: FRAME ISSUE! 8May 20, 2010 1:53 am The F stands for face graded. So as I was told its not computer graded. I think they are similar but MGP10 is the most common. MGP12 is even stronger, but I have not seen any progect builders that do the frame and roof with all MPG12. You will also see timber rated as non structural, it can be in knoggins etc but not in the studs. My 2 cents worth. Cheers Willy........... “It's just as unpleasant to get more than you bargain for as to get less” George Bernard Shaw. This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 8014 thanks Chippy, i hope they have applied sealer but i am doubt to be honest, so i am gonna do this job after handover. 8 16269 |
