With regards to broadband - there is no Ewire or Velocity in Aubin Gardens. ADSL and Vivid only. Buuut... Don't pay any attention to the sites which tell you we're on the 'Jandakot South' exchange and that iiNet etc is available. While it's true, there's several issues: 1) We're too far from the exchange to get ADSL directly 2) Telstra have installed RIMs in the area. So yes - you can get ADSL, but it's not provided through the exchange - the gear for it is in the green boxes you see around the estate (there's some in the park across the road from the Adromeda/Camden T junction). Because our lines don't go directly to the exchange - you can't get onto the iiNet infrastructure for their cheaper Broadband2 plans. It's Broadband1 only. I've been racking my brain over this for the last few weeks, and ended up signing with Bigpond - 50GB ADSL2 for $49.95 if you bundle with home phone and your mobile. iiNet can do similar, but at slower speeds and they're generally going to be more expensive. Hope this helps. Jas. (Bring on the NBN!) Built with New Generation (Summit Homes) We own land!... with a slab on it! Plus a shell of a house with stuff inside ! Re: Aubin Gardens -Stage 9 & 10 - Come and meet your neighbo 226Sep 02, 2010 6:03 pm Hi Candylea Traditionally, RIM's don't incorporate support for ADSL. They rely on a fibre feed from the exchange, and their task is essentially to split that out into a bunch of copper lines, that run straight to your house. They're generally used in areas further from the exchange, or in newer areas where it's not economical to run several thousand pairs of copper all the way from the exchange. So it's a cost thing. Support for DSL is provided through the installation of a Minimux. So rather than connecting to a DSLAM in the exchange for your DSL, you connect to the mux in the green cabinet. If you've been told that you can't get ADSL where you are, it'll generally be for one of two reasons: - No minimux was installed. Nowadays, this is quite unusual. - No ports available. DSLAMS/minimuxes have a limited number of ports per unit. Each port represents a single DSL service, and 'hooks' into your line either at the exchange or out at the RIM. At the time of network construction, Telstra will make provision for X number of DSL services, and it's quite possible that this number has been reached, and it's not physically possible to enable any further DSL services for that unit. In which case, my only suggestion is to keep trying. Eventually someone will move out of the area or terminate their service, at which point a port will become available. Hope this helps! Jason. I have the phone lines done by the builder but have to get it connected to the exchange/RIM (if I want a home phone, which i dont really want) If I want to get internet do I a) have to get T to connect it to the RIM for ADSL b) can have naked DSL c) or have wireless Which one will do you think will be the easiest/cheapest/fastest type of internet for our area? Many thanks Garden - viewtopic.php?f=19&t=44214&p=670323#p670323 Decorating - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=47218&p=715743#p715743 Re: Aubin Gardens -Stage 9 & 10 - Come and meet your neighbo 228Sep 02, 2010 6:28 pm G'day Shon, Your builder will arrange for Telstra's contractor to physically install the cable from the street, and put a grey/brown Telstra box (called an NTD) on the side of your house. From there, you'll need to go to a telco (i.e. Telstra, iiNet, Internode), and request a new phone connection based on your address. Then you can go to Bigpond or another ISP of your choosing and request a DSL connection. They will in turn get in touch with Telstra, who'll connect your line to the RIM if there are ports available. Unfortunately, due to the RIM situation naked DSL isn't an option in Aubin Gardens. It's generally been the smaller guys (i.e. iiNet) that have done naked - it's kind of against Telstra's best interests to offer it, as they don't then get the revenue from your line rental. That said for a while a few months back Bigpond were running a naked trial, however I believe this has now ceased. As far as what's cheapest - we already had a Telstra mobile, so bundling this with a budget line ($20/month) and Bigpond's 50GB plan ($49.95 after bundling discount) was the best 'bang for buck' for us. Most other carriers will try and charge you at least $30/month for a line, and because we're on a Telstra RIM their plans are all pretty poor value in comparison to the new Bigpond plans if you want to go for the faster speeds. Wireless - personally I'm not a fan, but I hear Vivid's OK. If you use the net for any more than casual surfing though, then it's still going to be pricier than DSL. http://www.vividwireless.com.au/discove ... comparison Last I checked there were still a few hundred ports free on the RIM that we're on (I'm just down the road from you), and my broadband gets turned on tomorrow. Hope this helps!! DISCLAIMER: I don't work for an ISP. I used to work with iiNet, however that was several years back now.
