Browse Forums Building A New House Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 21May 08, 2010 2:46 pm Hahahahaha, I might set a record here....... My backyard is 13m x 1m - one of the problems with a small 368sqm cottage block I guess and with the building covanents? Thats for a 3x2 house/garage/alfresco with a total area of 220sqm. For me and my dog (minature pinscher), its more than ample. I even have room down the side of the house for my raised vege gardens to go in. If things change like gf becomes wife and dogs become kids then I may need a bigger yard. But not right now...... Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 23May 08, 2010 5:18 pm Our yard is going to be tiny.... 15m x 5m.... plus a 5m x 5m Al fresco area. The main reason for this is we wanted to build a single story house, and couldn't afford a 700sqm block... so opted for a 450sqm block instead (Sydney prices!!!). It took a while for me to stop worrying about how small my yard would be, but we had the choice to live in an old house on a large block, or buy a small block and build a new house. Our house is directly opposite a park, and our estate backs onto a national park and river, so i intend on using my surrounds a fair bit!!! Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 25May 08, 2010 7:29 pm We have 4 metres by 22 from the back of the house and about 7metres by 22 metres on the side. To be honest I really dont think thats enough.... we are building in a new estate so they have green areas and that the only reason why I was happy to do that, if not I would have built a smaller house. I wanted a smaller house and fiance wanted big.... we dont have kids now but when we do we will be luck to have a cubby house, sand pit and a small amount of lawn..... Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 28May 08, 2010 8:37 pm We had a 12sq house on a 1700sq block , now we downsizing to 17.5 wide and 13m in length. I think it really depends on the needs and wants of the individual. http://burbankascent2500.blogspot.com/ https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28503 [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/] HOUSE COMPLETED IN 119 DAYS PCI Complete Handover 24th August Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 29May 08, 2010 9:32 pm Our back yard is 4m x 12m, but then we have our alfresco and verandah on the side, with some extra room. Our last yard was huge, and the yard before that even bigger that we built another house on it lol. I have 3 little kids, so needed "some" yard to play in, BUT, we have 6 months a year of crappy weather too, so wanted plenty of space inside for them to play as well without us being on top of each other. So have made the house rather large Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 30May 08, 2010 9:49 pm Our backyard is 18w x 10.5 deep as well as the alfresco side about 7m x 5m. Our block is 630m2. The area we were originally looking the land was 512m2. We just couldn't have that with an active Labrador and 3 kids. This will be a nice size I think. Not too much in terms of maintenance, but enough for a shed, swing set and vegie patch. Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 31May 08, 2010 10:10 pm Our backyard will be 6.3 x 16.5 with a couple of metres down the right hand side. We also have a 5.5 x 5.5m alfresco in addition to that. We would have liked a bigger block too, but in our area land prices are soooo expensive. Even 300 sqm blocks are just about unaffordable for first home buyers in our estate. We think that our backyard will be perfect though. I would take a lovely manicured smaller backyard over an unkempt large one any day (my personal preference though), so at least with a smaller backyard we can look after it easily without spending our lives maintaining it. C'mon... face it.. you like your backyard because you have a BEAUTIFUL back neighbour!!!!! LOL Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 34May 10, 2010 9:23 am We've got 6.5x19 across the back, which joins up to 5.5x15 down one side (where the boat will be), so I think that's plenty. The fact that there is a huge park across the road from us is good too. Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 35May 20, 2010 2:32 pm Our side yard is 10m x 20m and our Backyard is 15m x 10m then there is sheds, chook pen etc on 10 x 10 then a shade house area 5m x 5m and then my aquaponics 5m x 5m our block is 60m x 50m, is actually 2 blocks zoned to one but runs 2 water meters, which is bad when it comes to rates but good when it comes to usage bills, retic runs off one and house off the other, I love the space as distance from the neighbors (guess that works both ways ) our house is in the corner of the block and the next door house is same size block and their house is a block away, I hate mowing the lawns though, but we have plenty of room for fruit tree's, at the moment we have Apricot, Plum, Plumcot, Mandarin, Peach, Lemon, Fig, 2 x Apple, Cherry, White Mulberry and orange tree's, also raspberry bush and banana passion-fruit, we couldn't live and enjoy a smaller block, luckily bought in 2001 before the boom at an excellent price and have been offered 5 times what we paid for it by someone wanting to put up units we will be here for a while WA's Best Weather Site (well I think so) Going 10 years plus (Click Here) My Aquaponic Project I'm Not an Alcoholic! Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 37Jun 03, 2010 12:44 pm Our backyard is about 1200sqm - enough for two normal sized houses. We have a 12m x 5m pool, 5m trampoline sunk into the ground, a fort that has a footprint of close to 9m sq so far. We are also looking at constructing a freestanding pergola / pool hut about 10m x 8m then the rest will be gardens /vegie beds for DH to potter in. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: How big is your backyard.....what should be the minimum? 38Jun 03, 2010 12:55 pm Our backyard will be 17m x 16m, when the new house is completed, and hubby has planned for a whole host of uses including a fruit orchard, vege patch and a shed. The point of this size is for our 2 BIG doggies and little toddler to run around, not that I look forward to maintaining such an area. Its still good to know that you dont walk out immediately to a fence, but I guess some people dont mind as they don't need to "groom" the area up which is a lot of effort. Even then, hubby said " i dont know what to do to with the rest of the area, maybe put up gravel & turn it into a badminton court???
