Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 29, 2010 1:04 pm Need to make a decision about rendering material. The entire inside of the house and a couple of feature walls need to be rendered. I was wonderignif sand/cemnt or acrylic render is best. I'm after: 1) As smooth a finish as possible 2) No cracks Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Which render - sand/cement or acrylic 2Apr 29, 2010 1:40 pm Can't really help here, but out of interest and maybe a silly question, but why are you rendering the inside of the house (as opposed to plastering it)? And are there any other options? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Which render - sand/cement or acrylic 3Apr 29, 2010 1:54 pm I'm rendering the inside (rather than plaster) since I like the robustness of render. You can knock it and it won't dent. Plasterboard on the other hand can be dented by impact. I like a rough/uneven finish where you could slightly still see bricks through it... we rendered the entire wall ourselves for just under $80 with Bostik acrylic render. In terms of a smooth finish - do you mean straight/flat/even/clean lines - or a smooth texture to run your hands over and not feel it breaking apart or rough. We mixed the render with bond crete - im not sure if this altered the texture at all - and then painting over it? Again not sure if this altered the texture - but even though it visually looks like a "rough" job (as in not a prefect flat surface) the feel of the finish is smooth. Cracking - no problems at all - it's been done for just over 2 years now and not one crack - i think the bond crete is supposed to help with this too - but you are right when you say it is robust! The wall still looks as good today as it did when we completed it 2 years ago. I hope that helps and I haven't confused the matter ! (there is a photo of the rendered lounge wall in my thread - can also post more if you're interested!) Don't like the idea of "slightly still see bricks through it". The main reason for thinking about acrylic render is to prevent/minimise cracking. Pictures come to mind of seeing units (in apartment buildings) - more often than not there are some very obvious cracks. So, if you can prevent that with acrylic, it would be great. One other thing - I suspect that acrylic would be quite non-breathable, as opposed to natural mortar. Have you investigated that in terms of condensation of the internal walls (not sure if that is an issue in Oz actually, but still). Or, have you installed those brick vents in your walls, I figured (when it was too late for us) that it probably would be a good idea. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Hi Alex, Thanks for the reply again. I had a chat with the builder, he said he will use primer, then hydrotec which comes with colour and sealer as well.
