Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 27, 2010 6:31 pm What did you choose and why?? Im sure there is a huge difference in the overall look and finish based on this alone. Just like the difference your mortar choice makes. Any close up pics to see? Ive found a few but just after other opinions Our brickies started today, til it rained And I noticed they'd used raked, and i thought we chose rolled. So I came home, checked the contract and...yep...raked it is Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 2Apr 27, 2010 6:58 pm If I was to do it all again I would definitely go with raked. We chose rolled and it is very inconsistent. Some of them are rolled really deep, som eof them are barely rolled... Some look like they have been raked! When we brought up the issue with SS initially he said that if he was building a house he would go raked because it is easier to make it even (or something along those lines).. We did check out some other houses with rolled mortar and they look much better... Obviously better brickies! We will be getting ours inspected and hopefully fixed up Building Monaco32 with Carlisle Homes in Alamanda Estate 20/08/2010 - HANDOVER 24/8!! Blog - http://ourmonaco32.blogspot.com/ Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=14415 Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 3Apr 27, 2010 7:19 pm I like raked - apart from just liking the look, I agree with Mrs Rose about it being easier to get "right". Also, you have less problems with mortar blow-outs during cleaning. Ours is flush mortar. Allegedly. Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 4Apr 27, 2010 7:21 pm We went raked. 1. thought raked wasn't trendy, so wouldn't date 2. thought flush & rolled would make the brickwork look too patchworky( our bricks are dark). 3. wanted the bricks to be the feature & not the mortar http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/radinovic_bucket/Como/DSC04388.jpg Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 5Apr 27, 2010 7:22 pm i kind of thought the same from some pics ive seen. Like the rolled kind of 'oozes' over the side of the bricks? Some looks great though. And from what ive seen the raked seems to look much 'sharper'? not sure if that makes sense. Either way, we have bricks started !! Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 6Apr 27, 2010 7:28 pm Sarahq, just wanted to add, I looked at your blog and I personally think your bricks look fantastic Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 7Apr 27, 2010 7:30 pm We've just finished being bricked, and we chose rolled, not for any particular reason though. Bricks haven't been cleaned yet. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Sincerely, Anonymous Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 10Apr 27, 2010 8:14 pm our bricks are selkirk musket haze, and we were having natural mortar, but upgraded at the last minute to off white which the bricky will then mix some sort of oxide in to give it a more beigy cream colour. Fingers crossed it looks good! Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 11Apr 27, 2010 8:32 pm Ours is a natural mortar. We really didn't research colours before our colour selection, as when it came time to decide, it was a deer in the headlights moment Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Sincerely, Anonymous Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 12Apr 27, 2010 8:49 pm We have raked. We chose raked because our bricks have a deep imprint on them and thought the deeper raked type mortar look would emphasis this effect. We were asked to meet the brickies on site so they could show us was raked was( they didn't think we knew) and so we could agree upon a depth for them to rake to. We had raked on our last house 19 + years previous when it was all the rage so knew exactly what it was. Our brickie said he'd not done any raked mortars in years. His apprentice had never even seen one. One thing with raked it can be easy for the rake to be deep and allow the holes in the bricks to show. ( the holes through the middle of the bricks) We got our brickies to return and patch any that went that deep. Rolled mortar does not have to ooze over the edges of the brick work and is currently in fashion as are flush mortar joints. Funnily after we asked for it and I posted on H1 about us having it the builders local branch had a number of requests for it. Secret H1 lurkers perhaps? This photo was taken early in the build. When doing colours with clients, it really is 50/50 and none of my clients have EVER even thought about mortar (so it's nice to read about people thinking about it!). Some clients when choosing rolled make comment about it not being as bad for spider webs, but personally haven't lived with it, so not sure. It also depends on your brick. If you have a nice clean lined facade and the bricks are very square, I'd go for raked. If they are a bit more of a tumbled look, I'd go for rolled. Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 14Apr 27, 2010 9:34 pm MBBN we'd heard the story about the spider webs and I think you do get a few more webs with raked.BUT we still preferred them for our bricks. Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 15Apr 28, 2010 3:01 am We've gone with rolled because our bricks are not "square and straight" and therefore suited the bricks much nicer (thankfully our brickies have done an excellent job). Our previous house (circa late 70s), the bricks had raked mortar but the bricks were very square and it did bring out the bricks. The only thing I hated about them was the stupid spider webs that kept recurring and having to clean them all the time. Having said that, we lived in a very leafy area. So clean and finished looking. They really have done a great job and Im glad now we chose raked. Will have some pics next week!! And I dont have to worry about any spider webs....Thats hubbys job Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 17Dec 05, 2012 12:09 pm I know this is an old thread but I'm stuck on choosing our mortar. We initially chose raked mortar for our Boral Mocha brick. However our site supervisor called the other day and kindly suggested we changed to rolled (the rounded one) as he thinks it suits our brick better. We have a variation waiting to be signed but I'm unsure whether I want to change or not. My gut instinct is telling me to stick with raked because I like that clean sharp look, but he seems very knowledgeable and just trying to help! It's natural colour btw. What do you think? My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61233 Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 18Dec 05, 2012 12:17 pm It maybe that the brickies want to charge more for raked or don't normally do it and are reluctant, don't know how to do it. . Or he doesn't want to have to put up with requests from you to fill sections where they have gone too deep etc. Rolled would be my 2nd choice as I don't like the flush look. except for rammed earth Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 19Dec 05, 2012 12:22 pm I think I will stick with raked. At the end of the day it's our choice and it won't change the cost to us. It seems everyone else favours the raked too! My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61233 Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 20Dec 05, 2012 12:25 pm http://www.boral.com.au/Bricks/selection-guide.asp The top pic looks a little deep to be rolled. It looks raked but I guess it could be rolled. It looks nicer. The top image came up when I googled your brick colour.
