Browse Forums Building A New House Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 21Dec 05, 2012 1:29 pm Stormy was going to choose mocha with a rolled mortar. according to this post. http://stormygirlscastle.blogspot.com.a ... chive.html here's another person who chose mocha. No idea what mortar style they picked but ti might be in the thread.viewtopic.php?f=31&t=55075 So did these guys viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34604 as did Just Erin and this entire thread. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=27124 Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 22Dec 05, 2012 1:38 pm I got rolled, I don't like raked that much and I think our house looks great rolled. Is the brick a slurry style (painted on colour)? If this is the case the builder is more than likely going to want flush or rolled so that the bricks are not chipped or damaged while raking. From my days on the building site raking joints for my Dad there are plenty of chiped edges and faces from the raker running over them Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 23Dec 05, 2012 1:45 pm Thanks guys, I gave Boral a call and she gave me a couple of addresses to look at around my area. I'll go have a look now and get back to looking at those threads later! My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61233 Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 24Dec 05, 2012 2:44 pm We have the Broal Mocha bricks and have rolled mortar, I think our bricks look great. When we went through contracts etc with our SS he said it was good we chose rolled as the bricks look better with rolled mortar... its not just your SS saying this about the Mocha bricks. To be honest though I have not seen the Mocha with racked mortar so I cannot compare or comment what they would look like but the rolled does look great Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 25Dec 05, 2012 4:18 pm I had a look at a few houses and although their brick looks great, I couldn't really tell what mortar shape it was, felt a bit rude to go up and have a closer look From a distance it looked flush, but it could have been rolled. I have not seen any that look raked.
This is the brick from the website: http://i1355.photobucket.com/albums/q712/LMcNish89/BoralMocha.jpg ...although I've seen so many photos where the colour varies so much, from dark browns to blues to lighter reds, it's frustrating! I guess we won't know until they're delivered and put against the colours of our facade. eg. eg. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I think I'm being convinced to go with rolled. The lady from Boral said it's better for the long term integrity of the brick in terms of the water flowing down the sides ? not entirely sure what that means but I assume it's because of less water pooling or something. Another bonus is less spiders/webs and it does give it a smooth blended look. I'll show my hubby tonight and see what he thinks. Thanks for all your help! Just worried I'll change my mind once it's too late Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 26Dec 05, 2012 4:26 pm Well - I'd never heard of a choice in this area. Not sure we were even asked ! Have to look into it ... Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 27Dec 05, 2012 4:45 pm Saint Mike most people don't know it's possible. Actually thinking about it , given that you will have a single brick layer on your house unlike construction style in Perth, rolled might be better because of the issues mentioned above. As for damage caused by raked mortar by the rake.. depends on what is being used. It was a common mortar style in Perth 20+ years ago. The pros used either a special raked roller or made their own. No excuse for damage with the ones on rollers. I did a tafe, term length bricking course with an older pro brickie many years ago and used to own one of the tools myself. Hmm might even still have it buried in the garage. maybe it was something that only was known/used in WA though. raked or rolled mortar? and why? 28Dec 05, 2012 6:19 pm Kexkez, your bricks look great! What are they and what colour mortar please? And has anyone got any experience or heard about durability of slurry bricks please. I have read one thread where owners had big dramas when they were cleaned. Any comments heard from brickies about them? Or any other owners not happy? Thanks for contributing to this excellent thread Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 29Dec 05, 2012 6:22 pm cream mortar. the brick is a metro clay brick called "collie" ( WA metro) Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 30Dec 05, 2012 7:20 pm Sorry guys I have no idea what slurry is! My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61233 Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 31Dec 05, 2012 10:53 pm Thanks Kexkez, nice choice. Um, I think my question about slurry bricks has been addressed here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20992 sorry Slurry = sloppy, cementy, goopy coloured mix that is packed onto the face of the brick and 'baked' in. I have seen them referred to as 'painted' bricks but technically they aren't painted (so I was told by PGH sales folk). Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 32Dec 23, 2012 7:40 pm We chose rolled mortar for our mocha brick and they are 3/4 finished. I'm really happy with how they look! Since it's now christmas break, does anyone know if the sections that are already done and the new sections will look different because of a few weeks gap? (eg. will the mortar colour look different etc) I'm just a little worried that we may be able to see a difference. Thank you all for your help! If you want to see pics follow my thread below. My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=61233 Re: raked or rolled mortar? and why? 33Dec 23, 2012 10:58 pm We chose flush mortar for our bricks, but we went Nutmeg Smooth face and as it's quite a contemporary home liked the flat look. I don't think a few weeks will make too much difference. Out bricks took 4 weeks to lay as it's quite a big home and our brikkie was very particular - slow but excellent so we didn't mind waiting for the end result. We have quite a dark brick and we don't have any colour differences in ours. I think they just need to be more careful when cleaning as the mortar has had longer to harden - although I am not an expert on that - I am sure your bricks will be fine. I added some images of ours in case you were interested: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Blog: http://cbcbuild.blogspot.com.au/ Building Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=62155 That sucks!
