Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 26, 2010 7:31 pm Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone building in an estate has successfully applied and been approved (by the developer and the council) to convert their double garage into a living space? My local council says we need to ask for approval from the developer, then submit to them the new plans, along with an assessment saying that the new living areas (being the old garage) are fully insulated, waterproof and comply with the current energy effeciency of the house. We are thinking of doing this, and then building a new double garage in front of the old garage. Do you reckon this idea will fly? Methinks not unfortunately. I look forward to your responses. Janet Re: Converting double garage into living areas 2Apr 27, 2010 5:28 pm If it is what you are interested in you will need to speak to the developer as only they will be able to provide you an indication of their standpoint. All I know is that our garage would never be approved by Council in any event as it will increase the living areas above the maximum allowable, will eliminate offstreet parking, and would sit below the one in one hundred year flood level. Good luck!
