Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 22, 2011 10:13 pm Hi everyone. I'd love some advice on an upcoming issue i will have. my new home will have a two car garage 6m x 5.5m. we have two cars so I will have no space to store my scale train set which sits on a flat timber platform of 3metres x 2 metres (about 9.8 x 6.5 feet). My idea was to use EYE hooks in each corner of the scale model platform and suspend it from the ceiling using a pulley system??? how does this sound? any ideas? It weighs about 100 kilo's. Thanks in advance Ricky Re: garage pulley system????? 2Jan 22, 2011 10:39 pm No problem... buy the pulleys in Bunnings. Called awning pulleys. Re: garage pulley system????? 5Jan 23, 2011 3:59 am If you set up a pulley system on each side that looks like the bike system (from my previous reply) and you wanted to lift the whole thing keeping, it level, you would need a pull of 37.5Kg based on your estimate of 75kg. Something like that would still need something like a hand cranked boat winch to do it safely. If you wanted to lift it one side at a time the pull required would drop to 19kg which is still pretty heavy. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: garage pulley system????? 6Jan 23, 2011 7:25 am If you set up your own pulley system you can make the force required anything you want, depending on the number of pulleys and ropes... In the diagram, count the number of ropes going up/down, subtract 1 and that's the number that you divide the weight by. The final pulley system has a mechanical advantage of 4, so that is 1/4 of the weight to lift. Add more pulleys for less weight. These ones have a couple of additional rollers/wheels/ratchet arrangement that only lift or drop if there is tension on the rope. I wouldn't rely for final tie off in the raised position...still anchor to a fixed point...like the way curtains are...but would stop a runaway. Ronstan(t) are a good supplier of yachting products...you could also try that new chain of shops BCF (Boating, Fishing & Camping). mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: garage pulley system????? 8Jan 23, 2011 10:09 am Check out https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_pdfcat.asp along with the Jaycar catalog I consider this to be the equivalent of DIY porn... ...or call it the IKEA catalog for blokes. ...and Fu we really need that garage forum! mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: garage pulley system????? 9Jan 23, 2011 10:13 am I've tried BCF for Ronstan pulleys and you're better off going to a specialist boating place (I go to Bias Boating in NSW but I'm sure there's a Vic equivalent). I bought a pulley that would hold about 400kg for less than $30 (this was to hoist a 90kg chandelier up into position on the ceiling) Also - try using Spectra rope instead of cable - just as strong without having to worry about metal splinters! After 4 years - we're in! Once you know the basics, the rest is easy. Read my post in the thread linked below. viewtopic.php?p=1919271#p1919271 2 19517 It's all about wireless, self install now.
