Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 01, 2008 10:49 pm I am a new owner builder and was wondering if anyone else on these forums could recommend any tradies they have had a good experience with who service brisbane region.
At this stage I need everything, blocklayer, plumber, sparky, concretor, plasterer, tiler, everything. and any who i should steer clear of would be helpful tooo, maybe pm me those Thanks. Re: Can you recommend good tradies brisbane to me? 2May 02, 2008 10:55 am sorry cannot help with your question, but bravo for your courage!! You need to understand that it is a very stressful job. One of my wife's friend who lived in Sydney, was also a owner builder and he swore he will not do it again. Imagine, his brother inlaws are: electrician, plumber, and kitchen maker who always ready to give advice on things (although they live in ACT). This guy also knew several tradies, but still those "friends" cut corners.
Make sure you got a very good recommendation... you have to find tradies who are easy to communicate with. Good luck! Re: Can you recommend good tradies brisbane to me? 3May 02, 2008 11:21 am Thanks oz, its certainly going to be a task and the house is not a simple house to build either (split level on a sloping block) and I will be building it using core filled masonry blocks with suspended concrete slab between levels.
Not to mention the strict covenants I have to adhere to I've certainly set the bar high for myself but that will just make all the more satisfying when its complete. Re: Can you recommend good tradies brisbane to me? 5May 13, 2008 5:59 pm Hi mate congrats on becoming an Owner Builder (I'm doing the same thing in Toowoomba) I only know a good builder in brissy which is C. J. Taylor (Jim Taylor) his tradies do a fine job and he has helped me many times and does still with my projects.
don't kow if this helps. also on a side note I just found out the hard way how much my building inspections cost so you might want to take about a grand per inspection into consideration when working out your costs. Enjoy the build hope yours is smoother then mine! P.S if your interested in how I'm going (and listening to my little rants when it doesn't go right) here is a link to my progress: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=5434 Re: Can you recommend good tradies brisbane to me? 6May 14, 2008 10:09 am Thanks draconis I will keep an eye on your progress as its better to learn from your mistakes than my own but hopefully you wont make any and it all goes smoothly, Its taking forever just to get quotes and finance well thats a whole new story Re: Can you recommend good tradies brisbane to me? 7May 17, 2008 9:33 pm Tell me about it!
I came up with the idea to do this in November 2006 didn't start building till January 2008! Took me months to work out the costings and to get the plans drawn up by the engineer, at least with the draftsman I got to have some input so it didn't seeam to take very long. But the engineer got the plans then I never heard anything for 8 months till he had finished and given them back to me! council was good but still had to wait months to get everthing approved all the time I couldn't do anything except a little demolition and lots of imagining what its going to be like! So are you doing much of the work yourself or are you just going to use contractor for everything? Is it a complete build or are you doing a major renovation? Re: Can you recommend good tradies brisbane to me? 8May 19, 2008 5:14 pm Its a complete new build large split level house using core fill blocks, big project especially having never done it before but learning alot. i will be doing all the smaller things like painting, buying & installing doors, towel holders, some landscaping, decking etc,.
