Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 17, 2010 10:00 am We are told that we need to meet the tiler on site prior to him starting on his work. Can anyone help and elaborate on what is usually done at these meetings. What should we expect? Should we prepare for it? etc. etc. Are there any tiling "plans" that we should be aware of? How do you get them? And who does the final waterproofing in wet areas - is it the same tiler just before he starts tiling? Thank you! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Meeting with The Tiler 2Apr 17, 2010 10:24 am The tiler might do the waterproofing - I'd ask what product he intends to use and the area he intends to waterproof. The placement of the tiles square or diagonal? The starting point - Will they have a 'full' tile width or will there need to be a cut tile boarder. The grout lines how wide? The tile adhesive what kind... cement based or rubber based. A few questions you could ask Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Meeting with The Tiler 3Apr 17, 2010 1:42 pm As Onc said. We also discussed having the edges of our tiles for the hob and bath surrounds done so there were no blank sides of tiles. Basically they cut the edges of the tiles at 45 degrees so you can't see the sides of the tiled where 2 tiles meet at an angle. we paid a little extra ( cash in hand) to the tiler to do this. I'll post a pic in a sec we also had our ensuite and main bathroom tiling in the shower tiled on the diagonal. This makes it easier to achieve good drainage down to a standard drain. this was all discussed at our tiler meeting. please excuse the dusty floor. It needs a wash. Kex, re. no blank sides of tiles - do you mean no cut sides? I doubt they will let me choose the type of adhesive - even if I knew which one is better and what for. I am a bit worried about waterproofing the full height of the shower screen. This apparently needs to be done to meet the standards anyway? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Meeting with The Tiler 5Apr 17, 2010 3:01 pm I bet I don't even get that option!!! I tried to be able to talk to the cabinet maker and that wasn't allowed!! Re: Meeting with The Tiler 6Apr 17, 2010 3:21 pm We had the same experience as kexkez.... the tiler wanted to make sure he was using the right tiles in the right areas, and to point out the fact that the grout lines in the shower floor tiles wouldn't match up with the wall tiles, since the tiles needed to be centred around the waste - unless we wanted cut tiles both ends of the wall (we didn't). Also things like: - horizontal or vertical for non-square or patterned tiles? - was the laundry splashback to continue around a corner? - exact placement of feature strips in the showers? There were a few other questions too, but I don't recall now. I was very impressed that they made a point of asking though. So many people seem to get no consultation and then arrive at their house post-tiling to find these things done all wrong. Re: Meeting with The Tiler 8Apr 18, 2010 11:30 am Most of the tilers over this side of the country do their own waterproofing. However we get the odd call or 3 per year asking us to do the membrane system, mostly on large wet areas though. Onc Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Waterproofing showers - is it necessary (or mandatory) to do the whole walls inside the shower? Or just the edges where the shower screen will be screwer to the walls? 2. Is it necessary (or mandatory) to waterproof around various taps and any pipe penetrations (water, sewage, etc) in any wet areas (including, for example, the water inlet for toilets and all other water inlets)? 3. What is the Waterproofing paint-on substance called (eg. some manufacturer or brand names)? Is it "ready to use"? 4. How is the Waterproofing paint-on substance applied - with just a plain brush? 5. How many coats of the Waterproofing paint-on substance are required? (and should all waterproofed areas be treated equally in this regard)? What's the drying time between the coats? 6. How long it has to be between the Waterproofing and tiling? Does the Waterproofing paint-on substance need to dry and for how long? 7. Is the tiling glue waterproof? Can someone post a pic of a correctly waterproofed bathroom (including shower and bath tub)? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Meeting with The Tiler 13Apr 26, 2010 9:16 am onc_artisan Who did that? Was that you? Hi onc_artisan I'm not sure if you are answering me. If you are asking if we did the tiling ourselves, the answer is "No". This was done by our builder's tiler. It has been taken down once. Another vertical wall of blue board was put up over the previous one to build it out to hopefully rectify the bad tiling done the first time. This was waterproofed and then re-tiled. It is just as bad as the first time. The mosaics in the whole 2 rows are all over the place. Going from left to right, there is: 1 large ceramic tile / mosaics / 2 large ceramic tiles / mosaics/ 1 large ceramic tile. Putting a level across horizontally from one end to the other, the two centre white ceramic tiles and the mosaics are up to 5mm in from the side tiles. The tiles across the face of the bath are just not straight. The end of each section on the backing dip down. We don't want to accept this tiling. Are we within our rights to ask for it to be done again. This would be the third time. Re: Waterproofing - *** HELP NEEDED URGENTLY *** !!!! 15Apr 26, 2010 9:50 am Wondering - No it is not acceptable end of story. Lex - You ask a lot of questions. The substance is called a waterproofing membrane (elastomeric) I am not into gratuitous advertizing but I am sure all tile shops would sell one form or another. Some have fibre glass scrim, some have a sheet material that is called 'sontara' others have 'flock glass' in the mix. The scrim, flock glass and sontara help the membrane to 'bridge' the gaps between wall and floor, around penetrations, wall to wall etc. The spec over here for waterproofing wet areas, is that for tiled areas all floor and walls 900mm from a water outlet be covered. floor flanges be used in off ground slabs and timber flooring and in the case of a wet area of the ground then the whole area be 'tanked'. 2 coats or 3 as the case maybe for different products. Brush or roller. Minimum 6 hrs cure before tiling but some 24 hrs ( but must be cured) That will be 20 cents please Onc Where you are coming from is where you are going to...
