Re: HELP with phone trench 42May 10, 2010 12:28 pm We've got the blue cable out of the house (and two points prewired by the builder) - but we haven't got the conduit...is it likely that it's buried underneath some dirt, or that they didn't do it ? If I don't have the conduit, what happens then, will it cost more to get a contractor to do it ? Also, I'm putting in a second line to one of the points - i assume it can all still go through the grey T$ box and from the same trench, it's more of a "pay us and we'll flick a switch" situation ? I'm guessing it would be the 125ish connection fee cables are in place.. would just be a matter to connect up the pairs at the Pillar, Pits and NTD Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: HELP with phone trench 44May 10, 2010 4:26 pm Please correct me if I have this wrong We got a Telstra approved contratcor to dig the trench, connect the conduit and run the wire through the house which cost us $349 approx. Who installs the socket inside the house once the plaster is on?Do I have to get the contractor back or does Telstra do this? And after the conduit is done we have to pay Telstra $299 to do the final connection? So all up we are having to pay $648 just to get the home phone installed? Re: HELP with phone trench 45May 10, 2010 4:35 pm Your builder should have a phone line somewhere for Telstra to connect to. We got given our ph # the day they arrived. It took them 3 times though as they kept canceling. We paid $299 to Telstra. Trench was already done-they just need to pull the line through. As I understand it, you only need to get a contractor (or you can do it yourself) to dig the trench from the boundary of your land to the building entry point (generally near where your electricity box is), and then the conduit, external cabling etc is hooked up by Telstra tech (which is a part of the $299 fee) Re: HELP with phone trench 50May 11, 2010 11:36 am Sorry if I have confused people. Hopefully this makes sense We have already had a contractor do the following: 1. Dig the trench 2. Connect Conduit 3. Lay cable in the ground & connect cable from street to my house 4. Cable has been then continued into my house and is hanging out of the wall in our study waiting for a socket to go on. This cost us $340 approx. We are now near handover. We called Telstra to organise a day to activate our line, they gave us our telephone number and said it will cost $299 to activate the line. So at the moment our house is all plastered and painted with a black cable hanging out of the wall with no socket as yet. So all up to get a telephone line installed and activated it is going to cost us near $700 Re: HELP with phone trench 51May 11, 2010 1:13 pm the final internal termination should be part of the fitting cost of everthign else (telephone) wise.. unless the cabler has not quoted for this as part of the installtion. then it will be extra a call out fee and parts.. Once again assumptions of what telsra/ builders will do has caused problems. when i quote for a job i inclued everything from the internal Lead in to termination of all points where as alot of people like your good self don't fully investigate and take others words on what needs to be done tho each persons "connections" are different. the $299 fee is the call out for the tech to ensure the node, pit connections and exchange are all sorted if the lead in conduit is in place. they will run ithe lead in cable and terminate and fit the NTD to the outside wall, and once this is down they will leave as the NTD is their network boundry and internal cabling/ termination isn't thier problem anymore. anyways i hope you get this sorted quickly Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal Re: HELP with phone trench 52May 11, 2010 2:28 pm Quote: Sorry if I have confused people. We nearly fell for the trap where we were quoted $370 by a contractor to dig the trench, lay the conduit & connect the telephone cable from the Telstra pit to the NTD (box on the side of the house). Then it would be another $299 connection fee to Telstra to activate the line. Fortunately we discovered that the $299 telstra fee INCLUDES laying the conduit, connecting the telephone cable between the Telstra pit and the side of the house and then activating the line. All we had to do was dig the trench. We ended up 'saving' $370 by not falling for what I believe to be a scam by the builders preffered telephone contractors. The $340 we had to pay covers the digging of the trench. The cable work that has been done has not been paid for as yet as this is included in the $299 for telstra. Sorry I am a little slow today Re: HELP with phone trench 54May 11, 2010 8:22 pm Rubber_noggin, so TEL does everything except the actual digging of the trench?? Which means $299 only if you are able to dig it yourself? And that includes any length of cabling too? Who did you call to do this, Telstra only or some of their special contractors (like Silcar or similar)? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: HELP with phone trench 57May 11, 2010 8:54 pm Hmmm, what's "certain" length, Pugs? Is it possible to get a more concrete answer (and to more than 1 question )? Hopefully r_n can help Fruitty, call Dial before you dig. They will send you a plan which shows telstra pits. Then just go from there. If the pit is not obvious on the nature strip, just scratch the ground where you think it should be (as per the plan) and that's your digging target! BTW, do you need to dig under a driveway? All I did was call Telstra and explain it was a brand new house and they put me onto Service Stream which was based in eastern states somewhere. They lodged a job with a local guy here and he called me within 3-5 business days to organise a time to come out and do all the cabling work etc. My hubby dug the trench to save a few $$$ and the guy came and ran all the cabling from the telstra pit on the boundary to the house and we have one of those little grey boxes near the meter box. We had the builder put in 2 conduits where we wanted phone points and the price from Telstra included the first point. We then paid the contractor separately for the second point and he did that too while he was there! Too easy! All up it cost $299 from Telstra including the cabling and first telephone point and then just the extra direct to the contractor for the second point. We are yet to be billed from Telstra but believe that will come on our first bill. We are with Telstra for home phone as we don't use it much and it suits our needs so once we are ready to move into the house I will just phone them up and connect the actual line with a phone number. Was easier than I thought it would be! Although the first time I called the 1800 number I got some lady I couldn't really understand and she kept wanting to hook me up on plans and so I told her not to worry and called the normal bill enquiry number and got somebody much more helpful to put me onto Service Stream. Re: HELP with phone trench 60May 12, 2010 8:28 am Thanks, Pugs. Mrs D, if you don't mind sharing, how long was your trench and did it go under a driveway? And did you pay the guy same price as Telstra (299)? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... 2 4331 Hi there, long-time lurker but first time posting.
