Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 13, 2010 9:29 am This is driving me mad!!!!!!! Ive rung telstra like 3times and they just dont understand what Im asking. I am telling them I have built a brand new home and it is ready to move into. However we need our phone line trench dug and phone line connected. They have no idea what Im taking about. And keep ofering bundled plans blah blah all crap I dont want. Am I asking them the right thing? Am I doing the right thing to get my trench and phone line connected? Help Im lost and we want to move in in a couple of weeks and pour our driveway. THANKS x Re: HELP with phone trench 2Apr 13, 2010 9:37 am We've just organised this so fingers crossed what we've done is right!! We got told Telstra don't do the trenching/pits etc, you either go through an austel approved tradie or there are contractor companies telstra can recommend (can't remember their name though). We've gotten a tradie that our builder recommended to do the trenching/pit and then when we're ready to move in, you call your phone provider (telstra, optus etc) and they send out a telstra tech to connect the line. Hope that makes sense! Re: HELP with phone trench 3Apr 13, 2010 9:47 am OK we just rang a guy our builder recommended (Austel). They are going to dig the trench for $350 +GST or cash $300 Then we get intouch with telstra who conect all the wires in the box thing Austel have installed and make the conection live. That is $299 if you stay with Telstra for 3mth or $399 just to get connection up and running no 3mth commitment. Hope that helps others - thanks zb! Re: HELP with phone trench 4Apr 13, 2010 9:59 am Goodluck. They canceled on us every single time but to my surprise and 3rd time lucky they were out the other day! They tried telling us that we would need to speak to our service provider about the connection.....lol....so stupid when they are the only ones that do this! We need Telstra to connect the lines even if we go with another company. 3 times we explained to them each separate time what they needed to do. The trench was done they just needed to pull the thing through. The man who came was quick and tested the line so all seems good so far. Re: HELP with phone trench 5Apr 13, 2010 10:07 am So if Austel did the trench and lay the cabling and put the box on the wall, it has to be telstra who come and connect it? If I went with dodo or TPG or whoever for my service it is still telstra who need to actually plug it in?? This is all so annoying and money making hey! Re: HELP with phone trench 6Apr 13, 2010 10:14 am I'm pretty sure Telstra are the only ones that do the actual connection. This is probably why they don't give a damn 'cos they know even if they cancel your job over and over you still need them to do they connection! We are so primitive here in my opinion when it comes to this stuff. Telstra own the lines. http://www.telstra.com.au/movinghome/newhome.cfm Re: HELP with phone trench 7Apr 13, 2010 10:17 am Thanks heaps dollar. I dont want to be with telstra ultimatley but its gonna cost to not be with them as they charge connection then another company will charge to connect with them. Your right its all crap! Re: HELP with phone trench 9Apr 13, 2010 1:05 pm Nope we aren't going with Telstra either but needed them to do the connection. This is nonsense. Re: HELP with phone trench 10Apr 13, 2010 1:40 pm Is the phone trench thingy a white pole in the photo below (taken quite a while ago)? I know the left-most pipe is a water pipe connected to water meter, two right-most pipes are for gas meter connection so I'm left with this white pole to identify. When I asked SS if that's for phone connection, he said yes. Re: HELP with phone trench 13Apr 13, 2010 2:03 pm Hi rl, yes, the white conduit is for telstra wiring. Hi kateypink, only Telstra is allowed to connect you to their pit (all other providers are just using their network). BTW, same issues here with Telstra, you are not alone ... Are you in VIC? Austel - is that like TPG and similar? If yes, I'm surprised that they would do the trenching My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: HELP with phone trench 14Apr 13, 2010 2:36 pm Yep Im in VIC. Apparently you yourself a private contractor or telstra can do the trench and lay cabeling but Telstra connects you. Im connecting with them for the min 3mths on homeline budget $20 a month. After 3mths see ya Telstra. Not doing the big Telstra/Optus crap ever again! Re: HELP with phone trench 15Apr 13, 2010 2:48 pm I heard that as well however in the end it doesnt matter you still pay the 299 connection charge. You need to find out which area you are in. In the west the contractor is 3rd planet (97402355). they will connect it up for you. If you need trenching they will do that for you also. But you will pay extra. Re: HELP with phone trench 16Apr 13, 2010 3:08 pm We've dug our own trench, couldn't justify paying someone else to do it... more money down the drain! Re: HELP with phone trench 17Apr 13, 2010 3:20 pm I had the builders recommended phone installer install the point and he gave me the option of digging the trench myself or paying him around $200 to dig it for me. Needless to say when he contacts me tell me when its required I will be digging it myself. Then its pay Telsta the $299 connection fee.....and transfer/sign with iinet naked dsl (assuming its available in the area) Building "DOMAYNE" through COMMODORE HOMES in Pearsall WA Slab down 15-01-2010 Handover 16-06-2010 viewtopic.php?f=31&t=29049 Re: HELP with phone trench 18Apr 13, 2010 3:33 pm I used the trench that the builders make to bring in the other stuff , water power etc. Just laid some conduit ( Telstra recommended white 20mm ) with some string thru it and then Builder even fills the trench in when they are done with it. I also rang my ISP ( cos the mongs at Telstra cound not comprehend that the ADSL line couldnt be connected by the flick of a switch at their office as it is a new dwelling ) and they said dont ring telstra as they will sell you a new plan for a minimum three months. I also get to keep the same phone number ( but this may be cos Im not moving far and the new line will still run thru the same exchange. But remember , all of this is in theory. Id be just as surprised to wake in the morning and find my Forehead had been stapled to the carpet as I would be if this works out as easily as planned. I didn't pay extra to builder for phone trenching....not that I know of, I thought that's standard. Or maybe it's because I have already been charged $68 per additional phone socket for each room... I heard that you sign up the telephone with telstra (they are the only ones who can connect you and allocate you to a telephone number) but then you aren't locked into any contract with telephone so you can straight away change to a prefered provider. Also I thought you only get locked into a contract if you get internet, telephone only... no contracts. All so confusing 2 4352 Hi there, long-time lurker but first time posting.
