My SIL and myself have been dealing with Telstra for four days to get our houses connected. Half the telstra people (we've talked to over 20) said its included, the other half say it is not. Re: HELP with phone trench 62May 15, 2010 10:59 pm Lex Thanks, Pugs. Mrs D, if you don't mind sharing, how long was your trench and did it go under a driveway? And did you pay the guy same price as Telstra (299)? Our trench was about 3 metres (approx) long and it did not have to go under a driveway luckily! Our Telstra Pit is right near our meter box on the same side so it was not far at all that the trench had to go. I only paid the guy the separate $100 for the extra phone point. As far as I understand all I am paying Telstra is the $299 which is yet to be billed. Apparently the charge is on my first bill once we move in. The guy that came out had his own business that I'd say he had a contract with Service Stream (or Telstra I guess) to do the Telstra work and so what I paid was like a totally separate transaction to his business itself. Nothing else to pay to him!! Re: HELP with phone trench 63May 16, 2010 8:27 am Thanks, Mrs D. That's my understanding too - $299 to Telstra (comes on the first normal bill), and then $xxx to some subcontractor for trenching/whatever. But, what did you mean with the extra phone point? Do you mean you installed an actual additional point inside the house (I mean on a wall plate, eg. in Kitchen, because you didn't do it during the build), or did you mean some external work?? Re: HELP with phone trench 64May 16, 2010 9:19 pm Lex - In the $299 Telstra include the first phone point (wherever you want it) but that's all they do. So I paid the guy $100 for him to install another phone point in our study as we wanted a phone point there too (first one we got was in our Bed 1). We asked for phone points on our electrical plan with our builder but all the builder did was put conduit in the wall (in WA so a double brick house) with a blank face plate at the wall so that a phone point could be connected later. The builder did not do anything at all for us to do with the telephone. So yeah Telstra installed one for us as part of the $299 and that's what I mean by paying the guy separately for him to do the other point - I didn't see the point (no pun intended lol!) in paying somebody else later to come out again to install our second phone point when he was right there doing it all! My DH dug our trench himself so no cost there. Hope that helps! Re: HELP with phone trench 65May 16, 2010 9:33 pm Right, that's better. We have all our points done during construction, so no more are needed. However, our trench is going to be some 20+ meters through heavy clay as hard as concrete, and under a future driveway My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: HELP with phone trench 66May 17, 2010 10:55 am Sorry Lex if I wasn't too clear before!! Glad you get the gist now! Ouch a 20m+ trench through clay and driveway will not be fun at all! We have quite a bit of clay where we are building too so know what you are facing! Hope it isn't too difficult for you! Good luck! Yep.... dug the trench myself (about 8 metres) & telstra contractor did the rest. Re: HELP with phone trench 69May 19, 2010 12:19 pm We've got in our contract "conduit from front of land to side of the house" for $300, which leads me to think that they'll do the trenching (or get someone to do it) - there is no conduit right now but the neighbours (same builder) have one, so they're following that up. But I wonder if that's the trenching only and not the connection fee ? Also, if I want a separate line - can I utilise one phone point (kitchen) for personal, the other point (studio) for business without having to do any more internal work ? The phone points have been pre-wired to the blue cable out of the house waiting to be hooked up. I believe it might just be a case of telling Telstra I want a second independant line to that certain point and pay the $199 extra. Re: HELP with phone trench 70May 19, 2010 1:18 pm Hi Paul "conduit from front of land to side of the house" - I think this is the same as ours - just an empty pipe in a shallow trench. Does your power cable come on the same side by any chance? If yes, that's a cheap way for the builder to "provide conduit ... bla bla", but all they do is put one more pipe into the same trench. If your power does not run in the same trench, then they have at least justified the cost. Sorry can't help with getting 2 separate phone lines ... I imagine it would just be some techno touch by Telstra ... On the other hand, apparently there are lots of areas where 2 houses share the same line (don't quite understand that yet ), so not sure if that would present any issues (if your area is the same way). You can get a second line as they will just use the second pair in the lead in cable but internal stuff will need to be sorted out after that.. it is beyond teltras mandate to do work beyond the first point these days Kodiak Data Cabling onFaceBook Consult*, Design and Installation Data, TV, Home Theatre/ AV Cabling, Multi Room Audio, IP CCTV and Door Intercoms Ask for a Quote. *DIY DATA Cabling Is Ilegal 2 4385 Hi there, long-time lurker but first time posting.
