Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 12, 2010 4:49 pm Hi do you think 3D Visualization is useful for you final decissions on Color and material finishes so you can see what your finished house will look like not only externally but also internally I would love to know your feedback and thoughts. I worked for a home builder for several years and also had a few houses built for myself and I know how hard it can be to finalise thoughts and finishes and make some final decissions. Which is why i think that 3D Visualization can be very useful but I would like to know the thoughts of other home builders that are looking to build. Can this be useful to new home builders? 2Apr 12, 2010 5:06 pm There seem to be several people on here offering similar services. I noticed newhomevisuals the other day. I think that being able to play around with a 3D tool to be able to give yourself an idea or finalise designs and such of what you are getting is absolutely invaluable, although from my perspective the playing around with bit is what has worked for me. As someone who is capable of using multiple graphics and 3D packages, I've been able to create virtually all aspects of my build - right down to my cabinetry door handles and tapware. Designing the house, bathrooms, kitchen and having a feel for what the house will end up being has helped us a lot with our design. This is something that paying somebody else for a single image or two to three iterations thereof wouldn't have been quite so useful with. I think it is well worth it for people who don't have the ability or the time to have a go themselves Re: 3D Rendering! Can this be useful to new home builders? 3Apr 12, 2010 5:17 pm Hi Somewomen, thanks for the feedback. Yes it certainly helped me when i built. Its a great tool I think aswell.... The ability to do 3D walkthroughs and overviews is fantastic. What program did you end up using? Can this be useful to new home builders? 4Apr 12, 2010 8:27 pm When first designing our home I used secondlife a lot as a fast prototyping tool (I find it really simple for throwing stuff together fast and with a pretty good sense of scale. Once we had tied down our design I played with it a lot using a mixture of blender, gimp and inkscape. I'm a big fan of open source tools. The equivalent windows based apps would be 3DS max and Photoshop (which I have these also, I just prefer Linux based tools). I absolutely agree that 3D renderings can be absolutely invaluable, although would perhaps extend the offerings to allow one off fee to create the house followed by a much smaller charge for any recolourings for clients who want to play with and test different options Re: 3D Rendering! Can this be useful to new home builders? 5Apr 12, 2010 8:48 pm Hey thanks for the feedback. I use a program called chief architect also has the ability to do actual floorplan designs to scale etc. Yes i dont charge for additional color changes and material changes etc so clients can see difference and make changes without additional costs. Thanks heaps for the feedback much appreciated. Thanks heaps for the feedback much appreciated. I think you would need to be very careful with that wording... You may just get people sending you about 50 colours and asking you to do up a rendering with each and every colorbond roofing combination. It's been a while since I did anything other than basic maths, but my recollection of combinations and permutations suggests that it would be a hell of a lot of work I think i'd go with the business model of the house with your set of colours and perhaps one or two colour changes. Thereafter any additional colour change at - say - $50ish depending on how much of your time it costs to make the changes? Site looks great. I wish I had a background in the building industry to be able to offer such things. Unfortunately, being in my field of work doesn't suggest a whole lot of industry experience with housing design Awesomely fun working with others to turn thoughts and desires into something really liveable, though! btw - website looks great =) Re: 3D Rendering! Can this be useful to new home builders? 8Apr 14, 2010 6:54 pm I think properly rendered 3D house plan would be great - especially if there is no display home. (I have tried as have many others I'm sure but failed - fortunately though I have a display home to walk through). But it can really help in making sure the paln has the right flow and will suit your lifestyle. I agree with somewoman that you would need to limit the number of colour changes - does two things 1) you are not spending time re-doing colours when you could be doing another plan and 2) it forces people to narrow their choices a little - too much choice and second guessing makes it a stressful experience. I suppose one issue is getting the colours/texture/pattern for flooring and tiling right - depending on how detailed the plan was your dollhouse view is more for a rough idea of overall colour schemes (I love this one especially if it is included on a scale block drawing), but kitchen/bathroom/living area internals could be difficult as I would want it too look as close as possible to the real thing ie my flooring through the living areas is vinyl - tile look cream with a brown tinge/pattern worked through (hard to describe) and and I'm positive their are so many variations of textures that people may through at you. Suppose it depends o what people are looking for out of the model. If i were you I would be definetly targeting homeshows, owner builder seminars etc because if you are doing a custom design this would be money well spent. In my opinion anyway. And reminding people on home1 about your service isn't a bad idea either. Webdesign is good, simple and easy to follow and easily found contact section. Best of luck with your endeavours. Can this be useful to new home builders? 9Apr 14, 2010 9:47 pm Somewomen thanks for the feedback... Yes thank you for the advise i might make a few other changes in the services area to make that clear about changes. Yes i love doing the custom design and rendering side of things, when i was in new home sales that was the highlight when someone came to me with an idea and I made it happen for them and then seeing it being built. I have still been doing the design work in the last couple of years on a part time basis for previous clients and word of mouth but now I want to take it to the next level and do it full time. Thanks for the comment on the website still got a bit of work to do on it but getting there. Can this be useful to new home builders? 10Apr 15, 2010 6:38 pm 244sfc thanks for your comments aswell. Its great to hear the thoughts of other home builders what they think is useful and what they would use as a service. With the doll house yes I do them to scale on site plans so you can see the whole overview and how everything works in together. I have access to most different materials so I can get it as realistic as possible depending on what people want. Every plan and render i have done are totally different and clients want to see different things from color floor plans right through to Animated walkthroughs so its quiet fun creating these diferent type of aspects for clients. Based on the feedback i have made a few changes if you would like to have another look. Its great to hear what people would like to see from a service. Is there anything else that i should consider changing or anything else that people would like to see? Thanks in advance. Can this be useful to new home builders? 14Apr 27, 2010 11:03 am All I can say is I wish I knew of this way back when we were finalising our plan. Ours is a custom design and the one thing I thought looked big enough from the plans (the pantry) is freakin tiny. I dont even want to call it a pantry lol. Doing a 3D walk through would have showed this up and there would have been a couple of really easy changes but because we didnt realise till too late, we couldnt move anything as a steel beam was in the way. One thing though, when I saw the word render, I initially thought it was just the external "rendering" you could do and change up the colours... Site looks awesome though, well done! Re: 3D Rendering! Can this be useful to new home builders? 15Apr 27, 2010 3:30 pm Thanks Ms Builder for your comments. Yes thats the beauty of it you can see how your home will look and feel prior to anything being done. Nice spot Helensvale, my sister lives at Coomera so get down that way a bit. I have uploaded it here viewtopic.php?f=31&t=32907 if you want to see his work. He just did what I told him too! The plan is just an L shape, as we have an acre and my best mate somewoman has placed her storage stamp on it wonderfully... send him your plans and watch him work his magic! nicky Re: 3D Visualizations!
