Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Prewire lighting first or do it after house built? 21Apr 13, 2010 1:07 pm OK, maybe this will help. All of our lights on both floors are just normal standard lights, except for just a few extra downlights that the electrician pre-wired for us on the ground floor (outside the contract, but with builder's permission). So, it's "pre-wired" - the wires are pulled thru ceilings (from where the d/l will be installed) to the walls (to where the wall plates will be to turn these lights on and off). He did the same with all the other lights anyway. All that's missing is the d/ls themselves - they are not installed in the ceiling space because they are not in contract. All to be completed after handover. So, was this sufficient?! And what's the story with JBs? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Prewire lighting first or do it after house built? 22Apr 13, 2010 1:34 pm Lex In your case it's just a matter of checking with your sparkie to find out how to go about. I don't think the JB do apply to you as you have already the lights installed and wired. The JBs are usually selected at pre-start to replace the standard lighting (lights with shades) provided by the builders. Most of the people building with the intention of having downlights installed after handover don't want to have these standard lights installed during the build as they will have to deal with patching the holes in the middle of the ceilings left by these lights. The JBs are an alternative to the lights - the builder can't have wires in the ceiling going nowhere... hope this helps you understand. I didn't think that there was anything odd or badly done or planned in the first place (with our extra lights), but when I saw this thread with people mentioning JBs and what not, I got confused (although I trusted our electrician and my BH). So, all seems good. Although, to make it all sqeaky clean , in regards to your post that we have "lights installed and wired" - not quite, they are only wired, we'll buy and install them after handover.
