Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 11, 2010 2:49 pm Hi guys, Was wanting to get some advice on whether or not we should get a door for our ensuite. My wife and i are contemplating on the following: - go for the more appealing look and have no door, with a wider opening. Just how the displays look. - have a hinged door rather than a cavity slider. so we can screw towel racks into the wall etc. - have a cavity slider. any help would do! cheers, Building with Places Homes - Glendale 23 (plus 2 square bonus). Think about one of you getting up earlier than the other and turning the light on and showering while the other is trying to sleep if you have a large opening like the displays. It looks great like that but I dont believe functional. Even with a door closed on an ensuite there is still noise that is annoying. What do you like the look of? NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! Re: Ensuit Door - Yes or No 5Apr 11, 2010 3:05 pm We went with a door for privacy when going to the toilet, and also when I am having a shower at 4:30am before work it helps make it quieter for the wife to sleep better. Also went for a hinged door because at our last house we had a sliding door and it was not quite level so the lock did not work properly and it slowly slid open. It makes sense if you are on different schedules. Saw a display a couple of months age and from where the bed was you could see the whole length of the bathroom. There was only a glass wall separating the two. Looked ok, but a little impractical. The wider opening may look better but isn't all that practical IMO. Our plan had our ensuite with an opening (no door) and then the wc was separate with a door. We moved the door from the wc and put it on the actual ensuite entrance. So it's all 'open plan' inside. Re: Ensuit Door - Yes or No 12Apr 11, 2010 3:22 pm I would say it depends greatly on your plan. Our ensuite doesn't have a door, and also no door for the toilet. The ensuite is tucked away through the robe, and thge toilet is tucked away behind the vanity area, so nothing is visible from the bedroom. The shower is visible from the robe, the toilet is only visible if you walk into it. We don't know yet how well this will work as far as sound and odour are concerned, but I guess we will find out relatively soon! =) If the ensuite opened directly into the bedroom then I would definitely have a door. If you want to do something funky as far as visibility into the ensuite and using the ensuite as a feature you could think about replacing part of the wall with glass bricks or something Re: Ensuit Door - Yes or No 13Apr 11, 2010 3:39 pm we paid extra to have cavity sliding doors from bedroom to WIR and from WIR to ensuite. We also paid $865 to put the toilet into it's own room. It really just depends on your lifestyle and particular likes/dislikes. Re: Ensuit Door - Yes or No 14Apr 11, 2010 3:43 pm We went no door..... Although, our ensuite toliet is in a seperate part with its own door to trap odours..... We have a big spa in the ensuite so it needed to be seen for resale values....plus imagine the adult times that can be had.... We also installed a dimmer light switch, so when you do need to use it while other is asleep, at least you can dim it down.... The noise is the trade off as is a little bit of steam moving into the bedroom... Re: Ensuit Door - Yes or No 16Apr 11, 2010 4:10 pm I'm not a fan of doors on ensuites, but a lot of people are, so it's personal choice. our ensuite has cream shutters for something different and my WIR is draped with a fabric and drawn across permanently - obviously these are aesthetic decorating things, not practical, but not impractical either... We also have a cavity slider to save room. Re: Ensuit Door - Yes or No 18Apr 11, 2010 4:22 pm royalblue OPEN! I like to watch! Ash. Sincerely, Anonymous Re: Ensuit Door - Yes or No 19Apr 11, 2010 4:28 pm We're going without and having the big opening. Our toilet is in a seperate room behind the shower, but that has a door. Ash and I both don't want to be seen taking care of business as it would be lol. We liked the look of the open ensuite, also it opens facing our WIR. There'll obviously be a bit of light spill over into the room, but even then it's still not going directly into the bed, so it shouldn't be an issue. Light isn't a huge issue in terms of waking the other for us. I do rotating shifts so I take my showers to follow those shifts and so they won't be a bother for Ash. If it's a morning start (0430) i'll shower at night. If it's night shift, I'll shower in the morning Ultimately I think you've got to just go with what you think will work for you though Land Deposit - 18/12/2009 Became a land Baron - 21/12/2010 Site Start - 27/1/2011 All moved in!!
