This place has a special on at the moment. Pretty good if you ask me. http://www.tjimports.com.au/wall-cladding.php Re: stacked stone anyone done it or knows how much it costs 3Apr 11, 2010 9:32 pm we where told $90/sqm (for Crystal Quartz) including the cement adhesive and tools required to do the job (DIY). They also measure and precut the stone. We're going to get about 10sqm of it for our front pillars ---------------------------------------- Building the PD Lisbon 24 http://www.porterdavis.com.au/#homeviewer/lisbon/24 Blog of our progress. http://lisbon24.blogspot.com/ Homeone build thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28665 Re: stacked stone anyone done it or knows how much it costs 4Apr 11, 2010 9:48 pm Sorry to 'rain on your parade'... I find stackstone to be another example of cheap uninteresting 'features' of modern homes. Stone CAN be a beautiful product that can really enhance a building. Its SOLID and classy look really can be spectacular. But stackstone is just a heap of material stuck in a heap. There's no FORM or real artistry there. The words 'STONE MASON' are nowhere in sight. Its just plonked on top of each other to cover another flat fascade or square pillar. Its kind of like taking a gleaming Ferrari, dissassembling every piece and throwing them all into a heap. You cannot appreciate the form and beauty that WAS the Ferrari. Its just a heap of scrap! Hmmm excuse me for my little rant. You aren't building a house for me, so it doesn't matter what I think. Ash. Re: stacked stone anyone done it or knows how much it costs 5Apr 11, 2010 9:55 pm yeah, look I'm going to have to disagree with royalblue - he's entitled to his op - but I think stacked stone can be gorgeous - of course it can be average too, just make sure you see a home, with the stone done in a way that you love, and then copy that... these things are personal taste, it obviously appeals to you, I assure you it appeals to many people, which is why it is so prominent in many display homes right now. Of course it will date, what doesn't! A thankful person is a happy person. Thanking ourselves we did not go with this but just personal visual reasons and perhaps wouldn't match our style of home despite the contemporary look. I have seen beautifully laid stacked stone and other examples that aren't so brilliant. Go for what you like/what you can afford and most importantly what will suite your facade. Re: stacked stone anyone done it or knows how much it costs 7Apr 12, 2010 11:44 am We have stackstone on our portico pillars so obviously I am biased and think that it is lovely. The stone we chose ties in all the colours of each of the elements on our facade. We purchased ours from Amber Tiles and had the tiler do it for cash. The main thing you have to keep in mind is that if there is any corners involved you either have to mitre the stone - which some tilers will not do, or they will charge an arm and a leg to do it - or alternatively purchase the corner pieces which is what we did. This can also work out expensive as they are more costly to buy then the ordinary straight pieces. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: stacked stone anyone done it or knows how much it costs 8Apr 12, 2010 3:03 pm If you're gonna get it to do yourself you can pick it up for as little as $60 m/2. We opted to get a quote for a tiler to do the job. Supply and labour came it at around $200 m/2 (not cheap). We decided against it in the end. Re: stacked stone anyone done it or knows how much it costs 9Apr 12, 2010 6:57 pm Hey personally i think it looks great. I did my front porch pillars in it and looks fantastic. Your right it is expensive but worth it i think. I had mine layed by a tiler and the edges mitred. This was the more expensive option but if you are paying for the product you should get it layed properly.... Its rather labour intensive as when its layed you have to make sure that the pieces match up and especially on the corners unless you get corner pieces. I have seen this layed in person so i can see why the tilers charge so much. I just look at buildings from the past with grand architecture & features of all sorts of materials. Like old federation homes with timber calved and turned and carefully crafted. Stone features that are perfectly honed and fitted and look like they will still be there in a thousand years. Those things are what appeal to me, but they are things that take lots of time and skilled craftsmen that perhaps are a thing of the past. Economics these days dictates that everything is mass produced or done quickly. Sorry but few modern homes inspire me at all! But to those who like the stack stone feature, I guess its what YOU like that matters! Hey here's a tip for you. The grain and features of stone can be beautifully enhanced as well as protected from the elements by sealing it with special types of sealers. There are other types but this is one of the best. http://www.aquamix.com.au/products/EnrichNSeal.php You know how a wood stain brings out the beauty of timber? Well think of these enhancing sealers like that. They highlight all the features of stone, and are also a premium quality penetrating sealer which helps the stone keep its looks and offers some protection from the elements. Ash. Re: stacked stone anyone done it or knows how much it costs 11Apr 12, 2010 9:13 pm Great Tip Ash yes I agree the sealers not only protect but look great and bring the colour out. Comes in neat squares including corner pieces and is paited to show different shades. Our house has stacked stone and we found some left over material in the rubbish. We were supprised at closer inspection. Looks ok when fitted though and we are happy with ours. Re: stacked stone anyone done it or knows how much it costs 13Apr 12, 2010 10:35 pm I think it can look good when it's done well. I've seen a couple that look a bit more ordinary though and reading this I can see why, not doing the corners properly would be the main thing. I'd like to do a feature wall off our outdoor room with stack stone. I work with owner, he/she is my man on the ground and I instruct them when to visit the site and take photos and I have other tools in the bag. 4 15275 I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this? I am in SA 8 17047 Depends what you're current inclusions are, but we're not including wardrobes and will just use second hand ones until we can save later on to get them built. Also have a… 3 11632 |
