Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 09, 2010 8:23 am We want to do an exposed agg driveway but will have to wait a few months at least before we can afford to do it. In the meantime I was thinking that we could juts put some sort of gravel down, whats best (and cheapest) to use and where do you get it from?? We're in SE suburbs and I was thinking someone like a Sand & Soil place? WOuld they be the go? Cheers Caz Caz & Co ALL MOVED IN!! Now comes all the hard work-decorating.... I have been in since Sept '09 and still don't have a driveway (waiting on front fence first). It's not too bad, but does get muddy after rain because of the left over brickies sand! I put 20mm screenings under my clothes line a few weeks ago to help with drainage so I wouldn't have to walk in mud days after rain to hang out the washing. So far it's proved to be fabulous! It cost me about $30 for a bit over 1/2 metre. This covered the small area under the clothes line well. For a driveway you would need a lot more, and have to get it delivered in (it's really heavy and hard to move, we just filled the back of the trailer for ours.). Just remember, whatever you get to put down temporarily, you will probably have to pay for to be removed when excavating for the driveway pour. A reason why I haven't bothered to 'top up' our temp driveway! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! As you drive on the rock you will compress it and ready it for your driveway to go over top with minimal work from the concretors - a little extra work now will save you quite significantly then. My theory is that if you have to spend the money to get the rock in there, you might as well make it count towards the final product We'll be doing the same, although we're planning on paving later. Re: What to use for temporary driveway? 10May 02, 2010 12:12 am Hi caz, Just wanted 2 give u an indication of cost if u r interested. I actually had to get crushed rock for the driveway section of my nature strip (between the road & the footpath) during construction. The council required it to "protect their assets" (ie; curbs, footpaths & drains). For an area of normal driveway width & about 3 metres length it cost $670 (not sure of actual amount of rock because I didn't organise it, my builder did). Hope that helps. Re: What to use for temporary driveway? 11May 02, 2010 9:56 am Thats quite expensive Grom.... we did our 8m long double driveway in crushed rock for $117 delivered! Re: What to use for temporary driveway? 13May 02, 2010 10:37 am yep - sounds to me like you paid the builders surcharge on that one. It shouldn't cost that much for crushed rock rubble - we paid someone to come out and flatten our block out for us and he had a few tonne delivered for just the cost of the delivery, then spread it around as part of what we were paying him for the rest of the works. Obviously the materials won't be completely free through a sand and soil place, but they shouldn't be massively expensive. Re: What to use for temporary driveway? 14May 02, 2010 10:42 am about $20 tonne delivered for a min load of 8 tonne.(a bit less than 4 cu mtrs) about enough for 40 sq mtrs / 100 mm thick Where you are coming from is where you are going to... We didn't want to go that thick as our concreter said he didn't want that much under the concrete and we would then have to get rid of it! 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen!
