Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 05, 2010 5:27 pm We are thinking of building with Limestone (Mt Gambier stone) for our new house and was wondering what others here think of it as a building material. There doesnt seem to be much discussion on here about it. Most likely we will use a combination of plain and rockface stone, from bruhn building stone. We like the look of limestone and would leave it 'natural' and only sealed for waterproofing, not rendered. Essentially we would like a design with an internal courtyard or similar as we are on the coast and the wind blows (All the time!!), from all directions. As we are also in a high bushfire area, we have given thought to using steel (galvinised) for structure and aethestics. Am also leaning towards polished concrete floors. Has anybody used limestone before, if they have would you use it again, if not what would you use? What are the pros/cons? Has anyone built a house with an internal courtyard/ alfresco area? Does anyone have any good links to designs like that? There seems to be a lot said here about polished concrete and i think we will definately incorporate that into our plans, but we would welcome any extra comments. We are building on the Sth West coast of Victoria, and as such close to MtGambier where a lot of building stone is sourced, which also is influencing our choice of material. Also we have been looking at Ecoslate as a roofing product, has anyone used this or something similar? Hope to go to a draftsman/architect in the next month or two, so any help or advice or comments would be great. Thanks in advance, sorry about all the questions!!
