Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Room Size 2Apr 04, 2010 12:50 pm It depends on the age of the children, I wanted larger when I needed a change table and cot and play space and rocking chair then small was OK when out of nappies and cot and rocking chair no longer used. The size is dependent on the furniture you want to be in there utilising the space. Space saving furniture in small rooms like captains beds, bunk beds and bunks with desk underneath can create more floor space so the size of the room is not a problem. Most bedrooms in new builds seem to be around 3mx3m but I preferred a little larger so as the kids grow older they can have a double bed and desk fitting well. So 3x3.6 is what I've aimed for Re: Room Size 3Apr 04, 2010 12:55 pm I guess it would depend on what you plan for them to do with that room. ie, a small child doesn't need much space - cot or single bed, book cases, few toys, change tables or whatever, etc. An older child probably needs room for a bed and a desk. An older teenager may want to upgrade to a bigger bed (I saved up my pocket money from the time I was 10 and bought myself a queen size bed when I was 15!! Many of my friends upgraded their bed as part of their moving out of home sometime soon plans) - so at that stage enough room for a big bed and perhaps a couple of bedsides, possibly still a desk and chair and some book cases. We've gone for 3.5*3m for the smaller of our kids rooms, and 3.4*2.8 for the spare/guest room (as it doesn't need a desk unless we accidentally have twins next!). Mind you, we keep a double bed in the nursery with our daughter, so need enough space for her cot, double bed, change table, rocking chair and toybox. It's not roomy, but it works. It gives me somewhere to collapse if I ever need to get up to her in the night =) I wouldn't want to go any smaller than 3.5*3 if you're planning to have older kids living in that space - it's probably their only escape from the rest of the world at times (and we ALL need that sometimes). Re: Room Size 4Apr 04, 2010 12:58 pm We've decided that it's important to have a desk and a bed (and most kids want a queen size bed when they get near their mid-teens these days). If there's not that little bit of extra space they'll need a separate space for studying. so skimping on kids' bedrooms can be penny wise, pound foolish (or should that be cent wise, dollar foolish). BTW, our smallest kids' bedroom is 4.0 x 3.7 (plus built-in robe). The others are 4.4 x 3.7. I consider these a decent size, but I've been to lots of open inspections with kids' bedrooms about 4.5 x 4.5 Re: Room Size 6Apr 04, 2010 1:10 pm 3.5 x 3.5 is probably a good size. Ours are smaller (about 3.2 x 3.2 if I exclude the area the BIR takes up and a little extra room near the door) and while a bit more space would be nice, the kids manage. The eldest has a double bed, the next one down is about to get upgraded to one too - that doesn't leave a whole lot of room, but enough for a desk and chair and some shelving. One thing I'd suggest if you're having built in robes (as opposed to walk-ins) is to spend a little extra on sliding doors. Hinged doors waste a lot of space and make furniture placement more difficult than it needs to be. Re: Room Size 7Apr 04, 2010 1:22 pm I just measured the rooms in this house with furniture in it to get an idea and 3.5x4 plus robe seems to be a good size. Kek yes sliding doors make life soo much easier! I've got a friend who is changing all her hinged to sliding. Re: Room Size 8Apr 04, 2010 1:44 pm somewoman I wouldn't want to go any smaller than 3.5*3 if you're planning to have older kids living in that space - it's probably their only escape from the rest of the world at times (and we ALL need that sometimes). Agree...we have a 13yro and 11yro that are in their rooms more than my 6 and 3yro.... Our house we are going to build we are thinking of more grown up kids than little now as they grow too quick. Re: Room Size 9Apr 04, 2010 2:29 pm Quote: but I've been to lots of open inspections with kids' bedrooms about 4.5 x 4.5 My main bedroom isnt that big Unless the room was for 2 children to share, I wouldnt go this big. Our minor bedrooms are 2.8 x 4 m (11.4m2) and this easily fits son's single bed, tallboy, TV in TV unit, DVD stands, bedside cupboard. There is also a BIR with sliding doors. He doesnt use a desk in there but that could easily fit in place of TV unit - a compact one would probably squeeze in there now with everything else. I dont intend putting a double or queen bed in there. Re: Room Size 10Apr 04, 2010 10:50 pm 3x3 is the ideal size in my opinion - but I'm one who believes the bedroom is for sleeping and that's it. Re: Room Size 11Apr 04, 2010 11:57 pm I wouldnt go much smaller than 3 x 3. Our last house we had 3.2 x 2.7 and we felt it hence why we built another house and our kids are only small with hardly any furniture so for a teenager I would want atleast 3.5 x 3.5 as they tend to spend more time in their rooms, well I know atleast I did! I also look at it as resale, you might win someone over with bigger bedrooms, I know I would be won over RHI - BALDIVIS PERTH 2005 Bought/Finished WA Housing Centre Home 2010 Building the Benchmark with REDINK Homes in The Avalon 2013 Building the Michigan with Cont3nt Living In Highbury Estate!
