Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 28, 2010 6:02 am Wondering what are people's opinions on the importance of brick ties. For example, we all know ( ) that the Standards specify that brick ties should be: - spaced at max of 600mm in broad walls (both vertically and horizontally) - spaced at approx 300mm around openings, ie. windows and doors (both vertically and horizontally) - embedded into the mortar by at least 50mm - sloping slightly down towards the brick wall (by approx 10 degrees max) - be free of mortar droppings - be of appropriate material for the local environment Have you noticed if your brick ties are done according to the Standards? From those of you who "know something about building" - How critical it is that the brick ties comply with the Standards? - Are the brick ties which are at the bottom and middle sections of walls more important than those at the top of the walls (since the top of the wall does not carry much weight at all)? First of all the brick ties are to attach the bricks to the frame- to stop if from falling over. Due to the way that leverage works a brick tie on near the top would have a great effect than one right down the bottom. I think that generally the standard should be followed but it one is missing here or there that fine. Re: Brick Ties 3Mar 28, 2010 7:42 am Thanks, borg. For brick veneer construction, for most builders, I've noticed that the frequency of ties around openings is in practice typically the same (or worse) as per broad wall, where in fact it should be doubled. Does anyone know what's the rule for articulation joins? Did you notice any extension ties in them? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Brick Ties 6Apr 08, 2010 3:00 pm I have noticed my brick ties:) I just don't have a comment because I really know jack about brick veneer contruction other than what I have seen my builder do. I didn't know about this standard, and my ties look like they are spaced the same no matter the size of the wall. They look like the comply with the rest of the standard you've quoted. Greg Re: Brick Ties 7Apr 08, 2010 9:17 pm Hi Greg! How have you been?! Thank you for responding! Anyway, I know that some of us are more aware (or interested) than others ... So, your ties are really spaced at approx 30cm around windows/doors?! Nice little advert for your brickie and good news for you!! I just cannot help but get interested in all the peculiar little things ... it's such a shame watching all those tradies exhibiting very little theoretical knowledge of their own profession but many come with a huge and vocal (but empty) pride My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... 2 8358 I should have followed up on this thread. So, the pier foundation wasn't large enough on the side it was leaning towards, and the NBN cable went through the pier, just… 8 12123 Just be careful with building stability during construction, that is when the structure may be weakened, refer to your engineering drawings for stability methodology. 1 7223 |
