Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 22, 2010 9:55 pm Is there a way to find out what houses are being built next to you? It just occurred to me that I have no idea what my future neighbours are planning to build. I would be disappointed if it turns out they're building the exact same house next to me, with the same facade... Is it against privacy rules to find this information out somehow? Or if I asked my builder directly if the same house is being built next to me, or really close to me? Bah, building a house is already boggling my brain. Re: How to find out what houses are being built next to you? 2Mar 22, 2010 10:08 pm I don't know if it is the same everywhere but our sales consultant told us that if someone is building the same house with the same facade within 5 houses either side 1 person must change so that 2 houses are not exactly the same! However I doubt you can find out what's being built until you meet your neightbours! Re: How to find out what houses are being built next to you? 4Mar 22, 2010 10:38 pm It's dependent on council I think. Not sure how well it gets followed, there's 3 Frenken Homes with the same facade in the same street in the Arden Estate (Pakenham). Re: How to find out what houses are being built next to you? 5Mar 22, 2010 10:42 pm Yeah that's true... there appear to be the same houses, just flipped around on the block with a different front door and different colours next to each other... I wonder if that suffices as a "different facade" !!!!! In our estate they have something similar however it is possible for the design approval board to miss things. My neighbour across the road told me that he had to object his adjoining neighbour because those people wanted (probably the builder decided not to bother and just photocopied the existing plans changing names) to build exactly the same house as the original neighbour had... Re: How to find out what houses are being built next to you? 11Mar 23, 2010 8:55 am My main concern is whether they're building the same house or not. It would also be nice to know if they'll be any 2 storey houses next to me. I did meet one of my neighbours, they're building with a different builder so that's good. But it also depends on who's on the other side, and what else is being built down the road and across from me. If your covenants don't specify whether you can have the same house next to each other, does that mean it's ok? Re: How to find out what houses are being built next to you? 12Mar 23, 2010 8:57 am If all else fails and you can't find out using the methods everyone else have suggested contact the planning division of your local council. Here in Newcastle you just need to fill in a form and pay a small fee (about $15 I think) and you recieve a copy of their development application. Other councils (again using a local example, Lake Macquarie) allow anyone to log into their website and view all submissions given by the owner or builder for a development application. Under the freedom of information laws anyone is entitled to see the details of a planned development, this is especially the case when you are the neighboor and will be directly effected. Yes, I would assume so. Come to think of it, there are 4 houses down the end of our road, narrow blocks, and I know are the same floor plan, slightly different colour schemes on each. By the time they get front gardens etc they start looking individual - anyway, its fine by me Re: How to find out what houses are being built next to you? 14Mar 23, 2010 12:33 pm Hobart City Council has a list of development applications on their website. All documents relating to the application are available for down as PDFs. They even have an RSS feed, so I get a daily update in my Google Reader feed!
