Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 19, 2010 9:47 am Hi builders What's the general consensus on tiling in the bathroom. The trend seems to tile to the ceiling - which, of course, adds to the cost of a bathroom. What's the advantages and disadvantages? thanks Re: Bathroom tiles - should I tile to the ceiling? 2Mar 19, 2010 12:15 pm We are building our first home & have decided to go with floor to ceiling tiles. Our main reason is with 2 young boys splashing about its water resistant & easy to clean. The water proofing is invaluable to us I have family members that have had to replace/renew their entire bathroom due to water rot. Yes thats probably an extreme but i guess it does happen! Our second reason is just for pure looks, we think it looks fantasitc Good luck with your decision & hopefully others will be able to help you out also Re: Bathroom tiles - should I tile to the ceiling? 3Mar 19, 2010 4:19 pm We have four ensuites and two powder rooms - so for budget constraints we chose only to tile the main ensuite to the ceiling. All the minor ensuites and powder rooms have the normal tiling heights. It does look lovely but our builder quoted close to $10k to do all our areas and we chose to use that money elsewhere. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Bathroom tiles - should I tile to the ceiling? 4Mar 19, 2010 4:25 pm If resale value is something you're really trying to capture, we have a family friend who is a property valuer and he has stated on a couple of occassions that tiling to the ceiling in bathrooms certainly helps sale value. With that said, we have chosen not to tile to the ceiling for our home. We do see the aesthetic and resale value, but like Kyton, the price our builder wanted was quite high and we thought we could put the money to other uses. We have a house in Doreen. Built the PD Kensington 24 (with Alfresco & Rumpus option). We are in...Decorating in progress...pics to come soon... Re: Bathroom tiles - should I tile to the ceiling? 6Mar 19, 2010 5:09 pm We raised ours to 2 m all around - I think this looks fine - our ceilings are 9ft high so of course would of been even more costly than in standard height ceilings - we dont have little kids and I dont think anything splashes much higher than 2 metres Re re-sale value - sure, it might add a small amount of value - but is going to be a drop in the ocean amongst other factors which also help sell your house - floor plan, colour scheme, garden etc etc etc Re: Bathroom tiles - should I tile to the ceiling? 7Mar 19, 2010 5:32 pm I hate floor to ceiling tiling all around! Had it in my apartment - trying to keep all those tiles sparkling clean was a nightmare - over time they get greasy and then dust sticks to them Cloudy ammonia solution gets it all off. We only went with tiling to the ceiling in the shower only After 4 years - we're in! Re: Bathroom tiles - should I tile to the ceiling? 8Mar 19, 2010 5:40 pm Some Builders only tile 1 course as standard , some will tile to 1 meter standard, I guess they all will tile whatever you want for a price, but I agree with Helyn sometimes we go a bit overboard. I have seen the garage floor tiled before in one house and if we keep tiling everything we may end up Tiling the Kitchen Benchtop , or Why not the driveway, the mailbox, the ceiling. A feature tile border on the Back Fence. Or perhaps I should be back on the tablets? I also think, depending on the colour scheme and size of the tiles used, it can look a bit clinical too. (IMO!) It looks awesome I don't think it is so much about resale value. It's like a dishwasher. It doesn't necessarily *add* to the value of the house - it just makes it a more attractive option than the house down the road for the same price but without this feature. Real estate trends usually show that these houses sell much faster than the non-feature-full counterparts (even if the owners had spent the same amount on the house). It was awful - green, and you couldn't do any baking because getting flour out of the grout was a nightmare. As for bathroom tiling, I personally don't like full wall tiling. I prefer the aesthetic of the contrast between painted wall and tile, texture, etc. I'm not a huge fan of tiling in general except obviously in wet areas floors etc. I also don't like the racing stripe effect of feature tiles going up walls, but thats just me. I guess time will tell if its a longlasting trend. Having said that though, there are some beautiful bathrooms on this forum that have this feature. I think that the colours you choose and general decor will have more overall impact. Our kids bathroom is fully tiled and it just looks fantastic...IMHO of course The builder said not to do it for the other 2 bathrooms but rather leave one of the walls blank as really there is no need to do all walls of large bathrooms. In period style homes etc I do not think a fully tiled bathroom would look right at all, too many tiles. But for a new 'modern style' home, it would give the house that wow factor imho.
