Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 14, 2010 7:45 am We are being told that we will need to move our meter box from the side of the garage to the other side of the house, which is on the external wall of one of my daughters bedrooms. We need to do this because we have extended the garage and apparently there won't be enough room to fully open the meter box as a minimum clearance of 800mm is required. We did ask them to recess the meter box into the garage wall, but apparently there still won't be enough room. I am concerned about having the meter box outside a bedroom. Does anyone know if there are any problems associated with this? If you are super cautious, just make sure the bed is at least 2 metres from the meter box. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Is it safe to have a meter box on a bedroom external wal 4Mar 14, 2010 9:32 am I tried to move the meter box to the garge wall and they wouldn't do it (my garge external wall is just brick) So I have it on my bedroom wall. I've been told there is no prob with it. Bedroom certainly isn't big enough to have it 2 metres away from my bed! It prob. no more than .5 metre! A lot of houses I've seen have the meter box on the external wall of the bedroom at the front...along with the gas etc. Is this really an issue?? guess if it is, its to late for me as I'm already bricked up Re: Is it safe to have a meter box on a bedroom external wal 5Mar 14, 2010 9:53 am Frogger A lot of houses I've seen have the meter box on the external wall of the bedroom at the front...along with the gas etc.( Not sure, but think there are regulations about how close the gas and electricity can be to other things, especially to each other. Personally, I don't think I would be too bothered, but would still prefer it being on the garage side of the house. You could probably get it relocated "at a cost" if it was a problem. Re: Is it safe to have a meter box on a bedroom external wal 6Mar 14, 2010 9:56 am Didn't think there was any issues at all... in my current place we have the meter box on a bedroom wall above the gas meter and water meter all in the same 500mm x 500mm vicinity??? They're just meters aren't they? Why would there be any issues?? (please excuse my ignorance if there should be an issue glaring me in the face!!!) I think the issue is the same as overhead high voltage lines; electromagnetic radiation. I think the jury is still out somewhat as to what is safe and what isn't, otherwise hopefully the building code would have been amended. But we chose to be cautious in this and our previous house, and not have bedrooms backing onto the meter box or any major appliance like the fridge. No worries about having enough space to open it unless you park your car in the driveway too close to the wall (but then you'd likely have problems opening your car door anyways). Our meter box is on our bedroom external wall, hasnt caused any problems whatsoever. Re: Is it safe to have a meter box on a bedroom external wal 15Mar 14, 2010 4:34 pm Yeah, I don't think there's a problem with it. The only reason I don't like the idea, is if it means the metre reader has to walk past your bedroom window. Why else would it be a problem???
