Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 12, 2010 12:13 pm Hi Guys, We have our tiles, colour and electrical appointments coming up soon which is exciting but we are stumped on the floor tiles. We figure this is our starting point for colour schemes. We like the idea of shades of grey, black and white for the overall interior colour scheme but we aren't sure whether to go for dark grey tiles or light grey tiles on the floor. I hear that light coloured tiles show the dirt easily but dark tiles show hair and dirt etc also. Does anyone have any thoughts on light vs dark grey floor tiles? Re: Dark vs Light Floor Tiles: HELP!! 2Mar 12, 2010 12:21 pm Why not go for something inbetween? Also you can get such a great selection of colours in tiles, you could go for a colour that has a bit of everything in it (although go subtle, would avoid bold, definitive patters). Spend some time in a few tile shops. You will soon see what you are drawn too. Also check out a few showhomes aswell, and see what you like. It's all down to personal choice. Like you say, both have advantages, disadvantages. (The house we are renting has white tiles throughout, I personally do not like this and am very glad I have picked a mid-strength colour for our next house) Re: Dark vs Light Floor Tiles: HELP!! 3Mar 12, 2010 12:26 pm you might also like to consider the size of the room. Lighter shades can make the space feel larger than darker ones. progress viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20401 sculptures viewtopic.php?f=36&t=26607 pole trouble viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25988 Re: Dark vs Light Floor Tiles: HELP!! 4Mar 12, 2010 1:07 pm We had dark tiles on the floor in our toilet, bathroom and laundry in our old place and they looked really nice. They did show up a bit of hair but not that bad, you could live with it. We are getting a middle type colour for the new place, but I made sure that it had some sort of pattern/markings to it so that it doesn't show up every speck of dirt and dust! Bek I'm back Re: Dark vs Light Floor Tiles: HELP!! 5Mar 12, 2010 2:07 pm I would advise against lighter floor tiles, they are painful to keep clean!! Also if you have a light floor tile, you will invariably have a lighter grout which is even worse to try keep clean. We put light floor tiles in a renovation we did. Worst decision I ever made. Also most ceramic floor tiles have a bit of a rough surface to reduce slipping, it's that rough surface that dirt gets into and unless you are happy to get down on hands and knees with a scrubbing brush, they are difficult to keep 'clean'. In our new place, we purposely chose a slighty darker tile with darker grout as well. Re: Dark vs Light Floor Tiles: HELP!! 6Mar 12, 2010 2:57 pm I'm with RhinoCharlie - light grout is dreadful for trying to keep clean. The tiles themselves look dirty easily, but they clean up easily. A misplaced spill and your grout is stained or you spend hours on your hands and knees scrubbing it with an old toothbrush to try to keep it looking new. Coloured or dark grout, on the other hand, just looks like coloured or dark grout. Coloured or dark grout needs coloured or dark tiles. I'd personally go a mid to dark grey tile and match the grout to it. You can give the room a light, airy feeling by the colours on the walls and furniture. Our house will be white on white on more white on charcoal tiles and grout when it is finished. We're using a natural stone tile - honed basalt - and it it absolutely supurb. I can't wait until we have handover so that we can get them installed =) Re: Dark vs Light Floor Tiles: HELP!! 7Mar 12, 2010 6:55 pm I would go darker tiles over light ones anyday only because of the grout issue though. I cant stand the look of dirty grout and i cant be bothered scrubbing it every week to clean it looking spotless so we will be going darker tiles with matching dark grout. Good luck!! Re: Dark vs Light Floor Tiles: HELP!! 8Mar 12, 2010 8:18 pm Thankyou everyone for your comments. I hadn't thought about the grout issue at all (or getting down on my hands and knees to scrub the floor). I think we'll be looking to the darker grey tiles. Thank god for Home One!!!
