Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Garage on side of house 2Mar 12, 2010 4:42 am Bit of a no-brainer for us, of course we would. It would free up at least 4 x 6 meters of our house and I'm sure we could still have an access door into the house without any problems at all. So that's a *tick* on the yes box. Do you mean just stuck on the side, so that the whole rear wall of the garage is an external wall, and one side wall becomes an internal wall, shared with the house? It would depend on the house design, really. I like our garage just where it is (front and to one side) - I only wish it was wider for easier access to the back yard, but we already take up the whole block with our monster house. Re: Garage on side of house 4Mar 12, 2010 8:08 am I should have explained myself better haha I mean so the garage isn't visible from the front of the house. We have an acre block with 43odd meters width so it is a option for us, I've seen quite a few plans where you dont see a garage door from the front of the house. I'm curious if its something people would do if they had the option. Re: Garage on side of house 5Mar 12, 2010 8:28 am Umm, not really. I dont mind the look of garage doors, its just part of houses - our garage is as kek described - ie just on the side of the house, only the side wall shared with the house, whole back wall of garage is an external wall and there is a window and a roller door on the garage back wall, we have internal entry into the house which I do like - space or not, Im not sure where else you would prefer to have your garage Or have I not understood the question properly? Re: Garage on side of house 7Mar 12, 2010 9:04 am I getcha! I've seen that done quite a lot on downward-sloping blocks, so the garage sits under the back of the house. If you have the space, I think it gives you more freedom with the facade design. I don't mind garage doors at the front, as long as the colour and style complements the house and the garage doesn't become the dominant feature. I hate overly-big garages that take up more than half the facade. Looks like a garage with a house attached, instead of the other way around. Re: Garage on side of house 8Mar 12, 2010 9:14 am haha if in doubt just add a picture!! I am not a huge fan of garage doors but they do make some nice ones now I like the timber finish ones and you're right, they need to compliment the house not take over. I will wait until i speak with the builder, see what the front of our house looks like Re: Garage on side of house 9Mar 12, 2010 9:40 am Mrs P I mean so the garage isn't visible from the front of the house. I'm curious if its something people would do if they had the option. I don't mind garages, in fact I've seen some great contemporary homes where the garage is the most prominent feature or even the only visible feature because of the landscaping. It probably wouldn't work so well with other styles though. Not so much a problem on a block your size, but a garage down the side out of view can be an intrusion on neighbour private space and a noise problem for bedrooms. Articles often recommend bedrooms, especially children's bedrooms, should be placed away from the front for quiet and privacy, which is fine in theory until someone builds a driveway alongside. When we sold we were told by agents that it wouldn't affect resale value but it would reduce the number of prospective buyers. We could understand that as we would never buy such a property again and other people made negative comments about it too. We never got the chance to test out the resale value aspect as property prices were plummeting at the time. For the actual owner it means a greater cost for the driveway and compromised security (security could be an issue for the adjoining property also, depending somewhat on fencing and landscaping). Re: Garage on side of house 10Mar 12, 2010 9:57 am A lot of the million dollar plus homes that I have seen plans for in Brisbane are doing this, I would work well on a large block esp if you are going to put a larger shed at the back of the house. As Macy mention just keep in mind the extra costs for a driveway. We have a bad example of a garage on the side on the house in our street, I am looking forward to them moving in so I can see how they are going to get the car in the garage. There would be approx 5 metres to the side boundry, then there is a huge drop of about 2metres which would land them in the nieghbours entertainment area, I think this garage location would effect the resale price on both houses. Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Garage on side of house 11Mar 12, 2010 10:43 am Take2 I have noticed this too with the $$$$ houses in Brisbane as well. Your neighbours driveway sounds painful! I understand what your saying Macy, I'm not sure if those problems will be an issue though. The link I posted the house is quite deep and the garage is down the back but our house will be quite wide and only two rooms deep. The garage really will either be on the front still but just turned facing the side with the windows visible to the road.. or put it behind the front room so its only a few meters behind. On a plus side one side of our block is all bush and wont get developed for a long long time Re: Garage on side of house 12Mar 12, 2010 11:01 am take2 There would be approx 5 metres to the side boundry, then there is a huge drop of about 2metres which would land them in the nieghbours entertainment area Our situation was similar. The fence needed to be fixed after a vehicle backed into it. No way was I going to let the kids play outside. The neighbour's out of view garage cost us, what is the legal term... quiet enjoyment of our property. The block was a standard block though, not the size of the one in question here. More potential to alleviate possible problems on a huge block. I would consider the issue of security though, enabling vehicles to park out of sight on your property at will is not a good thing. I'd be getting a gate. Re: Garage on side of house 13Mar 12, 2010 11:07 am We have a 35m frontage however our design was still to wide to have the garage solely to the side so our home is shaped like an L - so when you drive down the driveway you then having a turning circle to your right into the garages. Our garage doors were chosen in the same Decrowood as the windows so it became a focal part of the facade. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Garage on side of house 14Mar 12, 2010 11:10 am Macy we are definitely getting a gate, you hear way too many scary stories these days it freaks me out.
