Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 10, 2010 1:31 pm We are looking at building a 40'ish square one story house.. I have seen SOOO many floor plans with different use of the space it got me wondering. Would you rather build a house with more smaller rooms or fewer bigger rooms. My floor plan has 4 bed, 3 bath, study, rumpus, kitchen, dining, family, theatre. I've seen houses with the same floor space but with like an extra games room or something. I've made all my rooms pretty generous so nothing is cramped. So what do you prefer. Have an extra room and comprimise on room size or go the other way. You have enough rooms that you can just enlarge them as opposed to adding another room. Might be more handy in the long run! Re: Opinions on use of floor space 3Mar 10, 2010 1:49 pm I definitely prefer less larger rooms than more smaller rooms. Once you've put in bedrooms, bathrooms, a laundry (always difficult to place), a study, a garage, guest toilet and one open area for kitchen/living/dining, there isn't much need for other rooms. The only other room I can think of adding these days is a home theatre which can also be used as a rumpus room. Even then I would have this so it can opened via double sliding doors into the kitchen/living/dining area, reenforcing the concept of less but larger rooms. I certainly wouldn't get a formal dining area or second lounge area unless there was space left over. The onlyother room I could think of putting is a games room for a pool table and bar which we are going to build as another building out the back (we are on one acre) once a pools gone in. Gosh I can't wait to build Re: Opinions on use of floor space 5Mar 10, 2010 2:03 pm Casa2 I definitely prefer less larger rooms than more smaller rooms. While I think a rumpus/theatre is a nice addition, I think formal dining rooms, and even the formal lounge, are becoming a bit redundant. Right from the start of our house hunting we agreed on no formal lounge separate from the other living areas. It is actually very hard to find a 30ish sq home plan without one of these! I reckon 9 out of 10 plans we looked at had a formal lounge opposite the master at the front of the house Re: Opinions on use of floor space 6Mar 10, 2010 2:12 pm I will never understand formal dining rooms! My dad had one at his house and it just had fancy furniture in it and it was never used. The room that will least likely get used is the media room but that will be for hubby for his sport and games.
