Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 22, 2007 4:32 pm Hi - I did a search on the forum and couldn't find anything similar so I am interested to know what is your wish list for a new house (within reason!)?
Here's mine in no particular order (I know some of this stuff is pretty standard): - Theatre/Music room - Main ensuite to have double shower/double basin and separate toilet - Outdoor room/alfresco type room (with connected gas/water/power) - Walk in linen - Walk in pantry - Bench space in the laundry - Double doors on entry and master bedroom - 'Minor' bedrooms big enough for queen beds - Remote double garage - 'Modern' kitchen (i.e. s/s appliances, pot drawers, drawer dishwasher, pull out spice cupboards etc.) with enough room for separate upright fridge and freezer and island bench - High ceilings - Dimmable low wattage downlights - Heat lamp/exhaust unit in bathrooms and exhaust fan in laundry - Tiled shower bases and tiles to ceilings - Drains in floor of kitchen, laundry and bathrooms - Bricks above garage door and windows (some houses have this as timber) - Bifold doors to alfresco - Ducted heating/cooling/vacuuming Other than that your standard 4 bed/rumpus/separate lounge/study... Gee I don't ask for much do I? After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Wish List for New Home 2Aug 22, 2007 4:51 pm since it's a wish list.... how about double brick, 9m x 9m garage, a tennis court, indoor swimming pool, 2,000 sqr meter of land within 10min walking distance to main train station, ....
oh, and extra $2 million in bank account will do... Re: Wish List for New Home 3Aug 22, 2007 5:44 pm Weeeelllllll I did say within reason... but that's ok you're allowed to dream After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Wish List for New Home 5Aug 22, 2007 7:54 pm Things I wanted but didn't get:
- glass walls in shower - wall hung toilets - uPVC windows - real Italian kitchen (not just a pretend one) But I did get: - hydronic heating - double glazed windows - built in fridge - Smeg kitchen sink - square set cornices - white walls - everything else grey (well apart from the front door) Re: Wish List for New Home 6Aug 23, 2007 9:54 am A closet would be great.
You never see a closet in the project homes, yet a small room near the front door for all your hats, jackets, bags, sports gear, shoes etc. would be unreal. We have the small 'Harry Potter' room under the stairs. Very handy, but bigger would be better. Re: Wish List for New Home 9Aug 23, 2007 1:34 pm Faster build time and lower cost? Is that even possible?
Hmmmm.... from my very limited exposure to this industry.... build time probably not because houses are such complex beasts and every situation is different - and you're reliant on external factors like weather and people stealing stuff. I work in IT where projects fail at LEAST 60-75% of the time and a lot of times they're just as complicated as houses so I think the building industry is doing all right in that regard Lower cost.... what's the markup? If I bought all the materials myself from a wholesaler and said to a builder here build this would it be cheaper? When you consider that you can get a BASIC 4 bedroom house (with everything except curtains from say Windsor Homes) for $150,000 and take into account design time, subcontractor labour (electrician, plumber, tiler, carpenter, cabinet maker, site preparation, concreters etc. etc.), material I'm surprised it's not more. What makes a house more expensive is the added options (which I will admit most times a huge markup is put on by the builder and you're better off doing it afterwards) Thoughts? After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Wow - My dad put one of these into our house when I was 10 - he put it into the bottom of the bathroom cupboard - and it went straight into a cupboard in the laundry below. It was also a fantastic way to get into the house as kids if mum wasn't home Ahh - The little things that builders don;t offer as part of a modern day home - I dunno. RE "home theatres" Which was at the top of muzzman's list. How many movies does everyone watch each week. Me - less than 10 a year.
