Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 03, 2010 6:42 pm Does anyone have experience with using instant gas hot water systems connected up to LPG bottles instead of natural gas? I will be building soon and unfortunately don't have access to natural gas where I am. I will definitely be putting in gas to the cooktop and a couple of bayonets for heating / gas bbq outdoors, but I'm not yet sure about gas hot water. Specifically, I'm wondering how quickly I can expect the bottles to run out. It obviously depends on how much hot water I will be using, but does anyone have any experience or recommendations? Re: Instant gas hot water + LPG bottles? 2Mar 04, 2010 10:24 am My neighbor at my last rental used to go through a bottle of gas every 6 weeks (2 adults and 1 child) which makes it very expensive, so we've gone with a heat pump hot water system. Re: Instant gas hot water + LPG bottles? 3Mar 04, 2010 10:31 am We used LPG bottles for gas cooktop and heater (until the heater broke for the umpteenth time) and at the height of winter we would go through a bottle in 3 weeks...VERY expensive...mind you this house doesn't have the best insulation and we are in Tasmania, but I would imagine it would be very expensive for hot water. Re: Instant gas hot water + LPG bottles? 7Mar 04, 2010 12:36 pm we were advised by an LPG salesman not to use bottled gas for hot water systems, as it works out to be too expensive. We have opted for a electric boosted solar system as it worked out the cheapest for our use. Have still gone with LPG for cooking, but instead of bottles, we are getting a tank put in under ground that they monitor and refill as necessary. Works out much cheaper than the 120L bottles. Re: Instant gas hot water + LPG bottles? 9Mar 04, 2010 3:44 pm Thanks for the replies everyone. I have meanwhile been doing more research and basically all the info I could find says that instant gas with LPG bottles is quite expensive. Much more so than with say a heat pump electric. I'm still definitely keen to stick with gas for cooking and maybe a bayonet outside for the BBQ or an outdoor heater, but I think I will go with a heat pump for hot water and probably use the ducted air for heating.
