Browse Forums Building A New House Re: If we want to sell stuff before demolition??? 2Mar 02, 2010 12:24 pm Most demolition companies are also salvage companies, and their quote will take into account the items they can salvage. So while you might make a few dollars now, you should also weigh this up against the cost of the demolition. (Not to say you won't come out in front by selling stuff yourself, you probably will). Re: If we want to sell stuff before demolition??? 3Mar 02, 2010 1:10 pm Make sure your demo company stipulates what they intend to salvage and what value (if any) they put on each item. I found that almost every demo company (in Sydney) said they would salvage as much as possible but would not commit to discounting the final demo cost by the value of the goods salvaged. I ended up putting the windows and other sale-able items on ebay myself. I stated very clearly if the item had to be removed by the winning bidder and set a date by which the item must be removed. Doing it this way, I got rid of everything I thought was saleable and was able to offset my ebay earnings against the demo cost. best of luck... Re: If we want to sell stuff before demolition??? 4Mar 02, 2010 1:22 pm My demo company said that a lot of salvage yards aren't taking stuff any more as they are soooo full, but that may depend on what area/suburb, and what demo company you go through. They also said they will not take floorboards that have already been polished...only natural ones. Not sure of the truth to this, but that's what they said. Most of my house was wrecked and taken to the tip except for the roof tiles, the front and back doors, the kitchen (why? I'm not sure it was very ugly!) and the front picket fence. All beautiful timber colonial windows, red clinker bricks and floorboards went to the tip. I had thought about selling stuff myself, but because we still lived there, it was too hard to organise it all before demo. When I moved out, I just wanted it done so I could start building the new one! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Re: If we want to sell stuff before demolition??? 6Mar 02, 2010 8:33 pm sell it all on ebay.. we sold everything we could from an old house we demolished and made almost $3k. We sold the old kitchen for about $650. Old art deco doors for $550. Internal doors, windows, floor boards, architraves.. cupboards, hot water system, vulcan heater etc. We even sold some of the external weatherboards. Re: If we want to sell stuff before demolition??? 7Mar 02, 2010 9:02 pm hmmmmm sell it all on ebay.. we sold everything we could from an old house we demolished and made almost $3k. We sold the old kitchen for about $650. Old art deco doors for $550. Internal doors, windows, floor boards, architraves.. cupboards, hot water system, vulcan heater etc. We even sold some of the external weatherboards. We did the same Sold heaps of colonial windows, leadlight doors, bi fold doors. heaps of furniture & made a small fortune. Mostly picked up from our house so it was fairly stress free. Gave the kitchen to a nephew & offered anything else to family - if they didn't want it, it got sold too. Tried to give away the roof tiles to dealers but they weren't interested in taking them - apparantly had too many If you have the time & energy, sell on ebay - you will be surprised how much you will make. We demolished the house ourselves, so preferred to sell the big items (windows etc), some for very little $$ as it saved us paying to take the loads to the tip. all the best Jazz Life is like a lolly, suck it and see Re: If we want to sell stuff before demolition??? 8Mar 03, 2010 9:22 am Thank you all for your input! Yes, just like Gambarol said, most of the companies who quoted me so far aren't giving me any indications as to what they are intending to salvage and how that affects final pricing they quoted. In fact, one of them even said, "I will do it for $xxxx and everything in the house is mine" And that quote wasn't that competitive either! I'd probably go through and see what items I can sell off eBay... Jazzie, how long did it take you to sell them all on eBay? Thanks. Re: If we want to sell stuff before demolition??? 9Mar 05, 2010 8:29 pm Gunman Thank you all for your input! I'd probably go through and see what items I can sell off eBay... Jazzie, how long did it take you to sell them all on eBay? Thanks. G'day well we had rough sort of timelines when we wanted to move out the house before demolition started, so I started putting unwanted household furniture on ebay quite a few months beforehand, so everything inside the house we no longer wanted was sold. Then we got on to the fun part We had lots of huge colonial windows which I listed for virtually 99cents. A funny mixture of buyers bought them, some paying up to $70 for the smaller ones & some of the bigger ones sold for 99cents We didn't care what we got, it was about just getting rid of it. For most items I checked out what other sellers started their bidding at & got an idea from that. A lot of the stuff I started at 99cents, but for items ie leadlight doors, I found others similiar & started at a price I wouldn't be disappointed with if I only got that one bid. I listed every item for 10 days. Try to start the listing on a day that factors two weekends into it - it seems more people have time to check out ebay on weekends & finish the auction on a weekday (make sense?). Remember, people love vintage stuff too - so have a good think about the way you list your item to get some attention. Give it a go - not sure if I can help any more, but just let me know. I feel like an old hand at it now If I can do it, anyone can good luck Jazz Life is like a lolly, suck it and see Re: If we want to sell stuff before demolition??? 10Mar 10, 2010 5:00 pm Thanks Jazzie! Because the property was being rented out, I couldn't really sell anything : ) But I guess the rent is dearer than what I would've got out of selling stuffs anyway And now I guess it's best to get the clean block ASAP so I can start building = saving my own rent! I've recently got a quote that I am happy with, and they seem pretty professional so far so I'd probably go with them! Thank you all for your input!
