Re: i saw mouse in my new house 6Feb 28, 2010 7:55 pm Place a few traps, stick some mouse/rat bait in the ceiling near the man hole, and anywhere else you've seen him hanging around. He won't hurt you, so don't be frightened. By the sound of it he's going to lose his life to you so he's got more reason to be frightened Re: i saw mouse in my new house 7Feb 28, 2010 8:21 pm I would hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you are in a new estate, expect to see a few more in the coming months. I remember in my old house when the houses around me were being built. It drove those suckers in from everywhere. Re: i saw mouse in my new house 10Feb 28, 2010 9:15 pm aww they are cute, I rescued one from drowning last week. I found mine in the cupboard under my sink. I think it came up through the water pipe holes. I have temporarily taped up these holes and will find some more permanent space filler shortly. Re: i saw mouse in my new house 12Feb 28, 2010 9:25 pm It's the time of year...mice used to always invade our old house in late summer/autumn. And the construction certainly will be a contributing factor. Get some "mouse chocolate" and chuck it up in the roof: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Supermarkets usually stock it. Then place a couple of bait stations around the house (behind the fridge or in the bottom of the linen cupboard seem to be favourite hiding places) and just wait for rodent season to be over. They get in through weep holes in brick work and make their way between the frame and the walls/ceiling. Then they find any opening to come through - in our house, it's the unfinished hole in the plaster where the electrical flex comes through behind the stove. If you can fill the holes, no more mousie. If you're bloodthirsty, just set mousetraps. My best friend likes to see the dead splattered bodies (she grew up on a farm ), but I'd rather they just went away..... Re: i saw mouse in my new house 13Feb 28, 2010 11:28 pm I am not sure if its the dead mouse or something similar in the wall next to my pantry but the pantry reeks of something rotting. Yet there is no meat food or anything ******* in there that would cause that smell, so I have deduced it could be a mouse / bird? The other night earlier on in in the week I could hear some scratching and rustling coming from the wall between my fridge and my pantry! Not a fan of setting up mouse traps dont wanna have to clean up splattered mouseys! Anyway, I have put in some balls of tissue with concentrate eucalyptus cleaning grade oil and yeah it smells eucy! So for now its just masking the stench. If anyone else has other solutions please say something.. Thankyou Re: i saw mouse in my new house 14Feb 28, 2010 11:29 pm You can buy traps to catch most critters live. We have mouse and possum-sized ones. The mouse one is blue plastic from a supermarket and it's called the "mouse machine" or something like that. We once caught a rat in the possum trap and she was the cutest little critter, but Mrs z, who usually likes animals, didn't warm to her at all. I let a mouse that we had caught loose at a lookout on the road down from the Adelaide Hills one day on my way to work, expecting it to scurry off into the greenery. After a couple of frantic laps of the car park it disappeared under my car. I couldn't see it anywhere and I was late for work so I drove down to the city. As I pulled up at the traffic lights at the only bend on Glen Osmond Road, it suddenly appeared from somewhere under my car and i saw it streak across the traffic to the other side of the road and straight under the front door of a very well-known Italian restaurant. It looked like it was going home and seemed to know the way. Anyway, I'd prefer not to kill critters unless I really have to. Transportation to a distant location seems much fairer to me. Cheers zeke BTW, there's a hefty fine for moving possums more than 50 metres from where they are trapped - so the only way to go is to block off any possible possum entry spots into the roof-space. But you have to do it at night when they're out....not during the day like we did. Thankyou We had a similar problem in our shed-dwelling and I had to make several holes in the outside wall to locate it. Unfortunately, assorted plumbing including air-conditioning pipes made it impossible to simply remove a sheet of c'bond. Lucky it was at the back of the shed so my patches weren't conspicuous. If i had the same problem in an internal wall (especially in a pantry) I think I'd have no option but to cut a hole in the wall to get rid of it and worry about patching/painting afterwards. It can be done quite invisibly if you take some time and care. Better than putting up with a putrid smell for weeks. The trickiest bit would be to know where to make the hole. If you're like me you'd end up with several holes to patch. Sorry, I can't think of any easier options...... Cheers zeke Re: i saw mouse in my new house 16Feb 28, 2010 11:43 pm Scratching in the cavity and a rotting stench most likely indicates a dead organism of some sort, so I think your fears are confirmed You can let it rot away if you don't want to remove parts of your wall (i.e. let nature take its course) - it'll just be bones left and the smell will die off. Should be about 3 weeks for a mouse, depending on humidity. You've got 4 options to fix the root of the problem, as I see it:

Re: i saw mouse in my new house 18Mar 01, 2010 1:22 am Hmmm. Not sure which I'd prefer to see if I woke up in the middle of the night, onc_artisan, the solution or the problem! I used to keep and breed mice as pets when I was only a few decades younger. Some of the most interesting science classes I enjoyed at school were dissecting rats. See what potential you have, cococrunch. I'd be inclined to just leave nature to take its course with the carcase in the wall cavity. It doesn't take long for the smell to end, much less time than it took my FiL to repair the holes he made to his plaster when he tried to hunt the cause of a bad smell down. Pfiff Finally making progress again, with a clothesline (yippee) and some much needed little things being attended to over the holidays. 40 C on New Year's eve? We love our a/c! At first I just thought it was a stinky batch of rubbish. Two days later I knew something was wrong. My suspicions were confirmed when upon snooping around the room I was nearly starting to gag from the smell. I looked under the bed to find a semi-decomposed mouse/rat that had lovely maggots around it and had stained the carpet. Don't fret it was like 30 year old carpet. So yeah, if you poison them, make sure that no bodies are in your house. They smell. All sorted guys. Just needed to buy a blade with the correct bush.
