Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 28, 2010 6:58 am We've not had a remote control garage door before, so this is a question for those that have one. Are you able to reach under the bottom of the door and lift it up by hand? The builder normally has left our garage door so that it is not engaged with the chain and can be raised and lowered easily by hand, but, the other day, I engaged the locking mechanism into the motor driven chain and then tried to lift it. To my surprise, the locking mechanism simply disengaged from the chain and the door opened. It doesn't appear to provide us any security at all unless the unit is faulty. Is this normal? Re: Garage door locking 2Feb 28, 2010 12:03 pm I have a B&D panel lift door. I had an issue when I lost power, and I could not for the life of me lock the door. The SS tried and he also couldn't lock it. My SS, and he talked to B&D and allegedly they said yep if there is no power, and the door is open, you can't lock it shut. They said to use a screwdriver in one of the holes to secure it!!!! I thought this was very strange. Later on my boyfriend managed to lock it, so I have no idea what happened. Re: Garage door locking 3Feb 28, 2010 1:18 pm If it is similar to ours (Securalift) then it is ok and once locked properly will not lift by hand. By locking, I assume you mean the pull down cord that releases it from the chain. When you pull up to put it back and into "motor" mode it doesnt re-engage the lock straight away. There is a special locking part of the chain that needs to find the plastic clip, and then it is locked. To do this, you need to run the motor afew time. During this, the chain will run through the plastic clip very easily (which is what your desribing when you pull it up by hand) and the garage door will not be moving. Once the special part of the chain finds the clip, the door will be unoperable by hand and as the chain moves it will pull the door with it. If you look at the chain, you should see the part I am talking about. Its hard if you cant see it operating with power and never had an auto door before but I hope this has made sense? Re: Garage door locking 4Feb 28, 2010 1:25 pm with power off you can't open it unless you pull the little rope thing to disengage it. One time my brother rented a townhouse that had no internal or external garage door and just one window.. the power was off for several hours and he had to get his car out.. he had to break the window to get in there!! so make sure if you have a automatic door that you put another door into the garage. Re: Garage door locking 5Feb 28, 2010 7:55 pm Thank you very much, Sierra and wakeboardandy. You have set my mind at rest on this. Sierra, your description is absolutely followable - I'll look for the locking link next time I'm there: TOMORROW! Possibly to arrange handover. Wakeboardandy, I remember reading about some people who were able to get into their garages, but during power blackouts a few years ago weren't able to operate the garage door to get their cars out, so I was very glad to see a cord to pull to release the door. I had visions, otherwise, of running the garage door motor off one of the power inverters that we use in our cars if there was no other way. Not being able to get in adds a whole new dimension to the problem. If your brother hadn't have had a window...
