Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 25, 2010 3:41 pm Hi everyone, This might sound like a really silly question, but bear with me ! I'm very new to all this. We are about to settle on our house which we've been building. Now I have no idea where to start looking or researching about our home phone. Who do i call to get our lines connected, or get a phone number, or connect to the internet. Can someone please go through the procedure for me of what needs to be done, how i need to speak to or call. Many thanks Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: How do I get a new phone number and internet 2Feb 25, 2010 3:51 pm Hi , I am sure you would have a television or a radio in a vehicle or even read the news paper. The people who want to sell you internet time and a telephone account advertise constantly. It is only a matter of taking down a web site or a phone number and ringing them. Just call them and they will offer all sorts of different deals . One comes to mind Telatra , but there are lots more as I am sure you will discover. Have fun Greg Re: How do I get a new phone number and internet 3Feb 25, 2010 4:06 pm Hi Greg, thanks for the advice. So whoever I chose to go with with my homephone, they will connect me up and give me a phone number? With regards to internet, i've seen those commericals but not sure whether i can get adsl2 in my area and i was also wondering whether there are any recommendations. I'm clueless but not that clueless Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: How do I get a new phone number and internet 4Feb 25, 2010 4:23 pm Go with Internode for your internet. Don't even bother with a phone number, just get telstra to connect the phone line, then use voip Re: How do I get a new phone number and internet 5Feb 25, 2010 7:05 pm Hi, Have you thought about using naked ADSL for internet & VOIP for phone? Plenty of ISP's offering this option - no monthly line rent ($40?) from helstra, voip calls cost 10c? national untimed. You should be able to find a reasonable plan from $40/month. The best place to compare internet plans is http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/. Just punch in a phone number from your area & it will indicate what you can get then punch in your internet requirements & will supply a list of plans & ISPs. Hope this helps. Re: How do I get a new phone number and internet 6Feb 25, 2010 7:28 pm I've just recently done all this....so I can tell you what we did. First of all, we made sure that our builder did the trenching for us....so what that means is that there is a conduit from the telstra pit on the pavement to the side of the house. There will be a grey telstra box on the side of the house...usually near the electricity meter box. I then rang Telstra to organise a connection. It can take a while to get an appointment, so make sure you do this in advance. During this phone call, I was issued a phone number. Telstra charge $299 for a technician to come to your house...and they do something in the pit...do something with the grey box and come in and test a phone point and that's it. This was very very straightforward. Make sure the trenching has been done because if it hasn't....then the telstra man will go away and you will have to get this done by someone else and it can get quite expensive. Now internet wise...go to this website www.yourbroadband.com.au enter in your address and it will tell you what kind of services are available to your area. We wanted ADSL2+ and Telstra were the only ones who can make that happen as they hold all the available ports at our exchange. We had tried Internode and other cheaper ISPs but they couldn't get a port as Telstra had monopolised them all. Our friend was bitten lately ...they organised bigpond adsl2+ and many days after moving in....and still no internet were told by Telstra that there were no available ports at their exchange. So DH told me to organise our Telstra ADSL2+ connection through their online chat....so that I have the whole conversation as proof of their promise. All in all....telstra have come through for us. They were punctual in connecting our phone line. Sent us our modem straight away (we got it sent to the old house before we moved - only start paying when it has been activated at the new house) and connection was so easy and we have had no problems with the internet or phone service. You will need your phone line set up prior to shopping for ISP because they test it that way. Not sure how they do it...but I would tell them my phone number and they will type it into their computer and tell me what kind of internet service they can offer me. I organised my phone connection before handover.....your SS should be ok with this but he will have to let you into the house and you will have to wait for the Telstra man. Take the opportunity to measure for curtains, etc etc. All the best....hope I made sense.
