Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 18, 2010 2:07 pm We're looking to build with BigM, a design that has the Butlers Pantry connected to the Laundry, (ie enter Butlers Pantry from Kitchen, then thru another doorway into laundry) and the laundry has it's own access point from the passage. We're thinking about combining the two into one large area so the only access to this area is via the kitchen. We were wondering if anyone else has considered this and what are your thoughts? We're happy we'll get one large pantry/laundry work area, however the only access will now be via the kitchen. We've seen some designs that are similar but would like to know people's actual experiences.

We had a house where you could only access the washing line by going through the house, and I would say, it's much more convenient having direct access from the laundry to the outside. If thats not the case, then I don't see it would be a problem. Alot of laundries are off kitchens, so all you'd be having is an extra bit for the pantry. Re: Ideas on combining Butlers Pantry and Laundry into one? 3Feb 18, 2010 2:32 pm Sorry, should have mentioned that! Yes, we're keeping the external door to the laundry and the window over the bendch in the butlers pantry section. Re: Ideas on combining Butlers Pantry and Laundry into one? 4Feb 18, 2010 2:35 pm Looking at the plan and being a lazy housewife I would think it would be a pain to come downstairs and then have to walk around the kitchen to get into the kitchen with the dirty washing. Then when it was ironed / folded same thing again - back through the kitchen to get around to the stairs to get back upstairs. Is there anyway you can still keep the access close to the stairs for ease of access? A laundry chute would help the dirty clothes aspect but not the clean clothes return (the main thing I hated about two storey houses - know why Americans have an internal laundry upstairs in most new homes!! But then again they use a drier for everything which is bad bad bad) Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Ideas on combining Butlers Pantry and Laundry into one? 5Feb 18, 2010 2:37 pm IMO i would be a little concerned having the pantry & laundry linked considering the heat/water vapour from dryer would be going straight into your pantry where food stuffs are kept. I think these two areas should be kept seperate. If laudry has it's own entry way then i would close off pantry. Haven't seen design tho so only guessing, maybe if you could post a plan we could get better idea??? Our BP and laundry are right next to each other. I rejected the idea because then you would always have to take your laundry baskets through the kitchen and pantry to get to the washing machine (I know many laundries are off the kitchen, I just don't like it personally) but also it meant that any moisture from the washing machine and dryer was in the same room as the pantry with possible dampness around the food and groceries. I know you can vent dryers outside, which we've done in our current home but I still find it's quite damp on the walls and cupboards in the laundry on many occasions. I want to avoid that in the pantry so I've asked the rooms to be separate. Personal view really. ... Since I'm new to posting to this site, I'll try and upload an image of the floor plan for the butlers pantry/laundry! I know a lot of UK homes have the laundry as part fo the kitchen; I suppose to save space. We're planning on having a front load washer and dryer in the laundry with the dryer vented externally so moisture won't be an issue. It also frees up a lot of bench space too. We gain a lot of floor space combining the two areas and agree that having to trundle a basket of washing thru the kitchen is something we'd have to live with, we're hoping we can have a laundry chute from upstairs to avoid this.
