We've found things wrong that the builder missed, an inspector probably would have as well, but they aren't there poking around every day like we are. Measure and check everything your selves. The reason we decided against was an engineer suggested that some are hopeless and some are ok, it's finding a good one. The engineers words were, one day they are candlestick makers the next inspecting houses. If you're on a budget I would go for a good inspector but only do 1 or 2 inspections. He told me that frame and completion are the most important (and slab stage before the pour is a good idea if you have a raft slab, not so necessary if you have waffle pod as less can go wrong), and that inspections at the other stages don't give much benefit. Much has been written on this, including a thread with a survey. My thoughts? I wouldn't buy a car without an inspection by someone with more knowledge than me, so I definitely wouldn't buy a house, worth ten times a car's price, without the opinion of someone with a lot more knowledge than mine. By the time of the pre-handover inspection, I had learnt a lot, but still missed some things of considerable consequence. Unless you have very good knowledge of building, don't run the risk as the builders will try to get away with as much as they can.
