Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 15, 2010 12:26 am Hi, We are looking at building the Monterey Q2. Just wanting to get input from anyone else building this home or anyone that knows the floorplan. We're unsure as to whether we should swap the laundry and living/theatre room around. I thought it was kind of strange having the laundry in between the two living areas but then someone suggested it does break the two living areas up and therefore you wont have as much noise from one living area flowing through to the next. We will have a tv in each of the rooms as we have children....so my question is if I move the laundry do you think there will be too much noise coming from one living room into the other??? Originally when i first looked at the house I wanted to do away with the part wall separating the living and kitchen to make it more open plan but I guess this would only add to the noise issue???...any thoughts. Anyone who has similar design your opions would be greatly appreciated as i'm very confused on what to do here. Thank you!! Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 4Feb 15, 2010 8:35 am Thanks Helyn, yes I thought the same too and had tried to do just that but the Henley website would not allow me to copy the plan. So not sure how I can go about doing it. So Ari do you think the laundry is better off being left where it is? I would swap the laundry so that it was next to the garage, also if possible have the entrance into the laundry opposite the kitchen. I think it looks odd having it between the two living rooms. You can always add in sound insulation. Wizard you beat me to it! If you swap them around, are you then looking at a wall from the kitchen rather than looking through to the living? I know on the bigger monterey that is what happens and it closes in the area. The part wall does close it in and make the room smaller but helps with the noise i guess. Thoughts please!!! Thanks so much Wizard for posting the plan for me too!! Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 10Feb 15, 2010 10:00 am Thanks for your input Ari. When you say if you swap the rooms around you would be looking at a wall from the kitchen....i don't think it would be any different for the standard plan would it? You would be still looking through one of the door ways into the tv area (just the opposite one to before) and the part wall that separates the kitchen and tv area. Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 11Feb 15, 2010 10:11 am My first thought was something like this (just a really rough drawing) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ As for that wall, not sure, it would look better without it, but if your going to use it as a cinema room, having it there would be better I think, maybe if you make the living room your cinema room and put doors in, don’t know. If neither room is going to be a cinema room, then get rid of the wall Current status: Busy making the house our home Built PD Francis 29 on our 576m2 block at Reflections in Tarneit Reflections Estate Thread Our Build Thread Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 12Feb 15, 2010 10:24 am Have you spoken to Henley as to whether you can make a change like this, some builders won’t make changes to the pipes so therefore won’t move wet areas. However, for what its worth, I would definitely have moved the laundry next to the garage wall. You could have an internal door into the laundry then, very handy. It looks totally wrong next to the living room. I would put doors to the living room, with some glass, letting light into the kitchen and take away the part wall giving a lovely big leisure space. Will look fantastic. Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 15Feb 15, 2010 11:55 am Hey kel, I would move the laundry to behind the garage if I was you. My next door neighbour has done the same in his Monterey. The doors do end up exactly like in wizard's last pic, they don't open into the TV area they open into the hallway. My reason for moving the laundry to back of garage would be that I have a cat and I wouldn't want to be able to smell the kitty tray in the laundry behind me when sitting on the couch 2m away watching telly! Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 16Feb 15, 2010 12:34 pm Hi, We're building the Monterey Q2 atm. You can check out our post here with updated plans viewtopic.php?f=31&t=29222 We moved the laundry next to the garage. We then soundproofed the living area. We thought about deleting the living room wall, but initially it will be a pool room, then in the future a kids playroom or a home theatre. If you keep the wall and add the door option you have lots of options in the future. Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 17Feb 15, 2010 1:19 pm Kelly72 Thanks for your input Ari. When you say if you swap the rooms around you would be looking at a wall from the kitchen....i don't think it would be any different for the standard plan would it? You would be still looking through one of the door ways into the tv area (just the opposite one to before) and the part wall that separates the kitchen and tv area. Looking at your kitchen its no different. However when I was walking through a house with it swapped with the old style of kitchen it ended up with you looking at blank wall if you stood at the bench. Perhaps they also made the laundry bigger though? Looks like I'm the odd one out anyway! Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 18Feb 15, 2010 1:33 pm Ari Perhaps they also made the laundry bigger though? I don't think they made the laundry bigger. I don't see how it would be different. If you left the laundry where it is, you would still have a wall there. The only difference is by adding the door option to the living area they have to widen the wall I think. You can always just leave the doors open. We'll be checking out our place again on the weekend so I can have a better look. You're welcome to drive down and have a look yourself. pm me and I'll send you the address. Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 19Feb 15, 2010 2:02 pm It wasn't a Q2 plan Moonos. The best thing you can do to help yourself is go to a couple of the new estates and look at the houses getting built. If you are familiar with the Monterey plans you will easily spot them (they're everywhere!). Most getting built will be the older plans though. Have a look at what other people have done and get a feel for what you like and dont like. Another thing I didn't like about the laundry being moved is that you can no longer usher guests through the first door of "Living" without them seeing the kitchen/meals area. You know...for those guests that you dont really want in your house. Re: Help with Monterey Q2 plan!!! 20Feb 15, 2010 5:53 pm I prefer Wizard's plan over the original, that is a better place for the laundry than between the 2 liveing areas and the entry to laundry isnt directly off a liveing room. I personally would leave the garage entry coming into the front hallway though. This is a very tight fit, I'm not sure if you'll be able to achieve what you've described. Would you consider accessing the separate toilet from the laundry?
