Our builder uses 450mm ones and I have visited a few house in construction and measured the spacing. I think strength wise it shouldn't make much difference as the timer won't need to handle any load. I guess it does make you feel better as there are more timber behind each wall. Cost wise it would be slightly higher for the builder. Also, if you need to hang anything on the wall, the chance of nailing it on the timber would be higher...
